Jesse Kelly Calls Gabrielle Giffords 'A Hero Of Nothing'
Source: Huffington Post
WASHINGTON -- A Democratic super PAC is airing a new ad in the special election race to replace former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) that features Republican Jesse Kelly calling her a "hero of nothing."
"And now she stands there with that smile and pretends to be some type of hometown hero," Kelly says in the clip, which began airing Monday. "She's a hero of nothing."
Kelly made the comment at a campaign event in August 2010, less than half a year before the Tucson shooting rampage that left six dead and 13 wounded, including Giffords.
A call to Kelly's campaign regarding the comments was not immediately returned.

(904 posts)The quote is disgusting and if it's "out of context" too damn bad! Kelly should keep his stomach turning opinions to himself.
Great profile pic, by the way.

(8,556 posts)People can't have it both ways here. Either you like the dirty tricks or you don't. If you do, then don't criticize the other side for doing it. If you don't, then don't use them yourself.
Pretty simple.
I don't approve of dirty tricks and quotes being taken out of context. I don't give a damn who does it. Dirty tricks are dirty tricks and I don't respect those who use them.
BTW, even though I disapprove of the dirty tricks, I'm not saying people shouldn't use them. Though i never would, t's a jungle out there and only the strong survive. All I'm saying is that anybody who endorses this but condemned Breitbart for Shirley Sherrod is a straight up hypocrite.

(1,688 posts)but dying in a war, surviving a gun shot doesn't automatically make one a hero. If she wasn't a hero to him before she was shot, I don't exactly know why he believe she deserves a hero status now. I have to say that I am one of those people who knew absolutely nothing about Gabby Gifford before the shooting.
Not exactly sure why they would include the last line in the add, it takes away from his other insane quotes in the add. Lets just hope it doesn't backfire like the Grayson add

(12,448 posts)but I was told that she is/was another "pro-business" corporate democrat by those I know to be OG liberals. They didn't like her except insofar as she was less terrible than the nut-bars with the 'R' at the and of the ballot.

(11,175 posts)And probably would still be had he not been involved in the gay page scandal and had a psycho right-winger primary him. It is not a blue district by any stretch, although there are strong blue parts to it. Gabby went to Congress in the 2006 wave that gave us a whole lot of blue dogs - along with two other blue dogs in AZ (who are since defeated, but may get back in because of redistricting in 2012).
She was popular, engaged with her constituents and represented her district well - I think that's what counts more than her ideological purity.

He did eventually resign after not admitting that he's gay and got into a scandal.

(11,175 posts)He didn't step down, but he did decline to run for reelection after being accused of molesting pages with Mark Foley. He did vote for DOMA and opposed gay marriage which makes him a hypocrite though.

(1,540 posts)Jesse Kelley doesn't have the capacity to think for himself. He plagiarizes other Tea Bagger comments and is incapable of an independent thought or opinion. On each and every question he has been asked to give an opinion on he never, ever responds to the question but simply regurgitates a canned Tea Bagger statement.
As far as Giffords not being a hero, Giffords spent all of her at home-time in Arizona with her constituents throughout Southern Arizona. She personally knows all the Border residents, the Military bases, and the individuals. She has done this with her personal outreach to the citizens......such as her visit to the shopping mall where she was critically wounded. As a Tucsonan and long time citizen of Southern Arizona, Jesse Kelly, a 10-year resident of Arizona, a high-school graduate, has never spent a moment in educating himself on the culture, the peoples and the needs of Southern Arizona in which he wants to represent. Jesse Kelly will only be a body in DC who will do whatever the big boys tell him to do.
When Jesse Kelly was asked, who he related himself to more, the Republican Party or the Tea Bag Party, Jesse, replied the Tea Bag Party....this makes me wonder, what happened to the "GOP," the Republican Party when it has allowed the likes of a Jesse Kelly to represent them???

(54,527 posts)In states like Arizona, they encourage it. Play to your audience. Even McCain has gotten
too "soft" for the rabid extremist wing of the Republican Party, and in Arizona, they rule.
Jesse Kelley, Allen West, Joe Walsh and Louie Gohmert are the true faces of the Republican
Party now. Be reasonable, and you end up like Richard Lugar. Lugar made the mistake of
thinking he was sent to Washington to represent the people of Indiana. He missed the boat.
Maybe 15 years ago, he would have been right. Today, it went right past him that Republicans
in Congress are there to do the bidding of the Koch Brothers, Big Oil and the NRA.
Gabby Giffords happens to be a friend of mine. I haven't seen her since she was shot, (hope to
see her this December) but before the shooting, she was 1000 times the person Jesse Kelley is.
Maybe now the ratio is down to 999 times the person Jesse Kelley is, but he'll still never make up
the difference in this lifetime.

(135,425 posts)It's "appearance-based snark." When people make fun of others based on their appearance (her smile, in this case, that lights up a room) it shows that they don't have anything that's an actual argument against the person. It shows the guy to be a mean-spirited shithead, who calls social security a Ponzi scheme, who wants to eliminate the minimum wage.
And it's not "Rovian dirty tricks"--watch the video, the reader plainly says "And TWO YEARS AGO, Kelly said this about Giffords..."
It's quite clearly said--it's not ambiguous.
Anyone voting in that election will know when the shooting happened, and it happened less than two years ago (Jan 11).
That commercial is fair--he said it, he owns it. It's nothing but video-recorded quotes from an asshole, that thing!
