Obama: Bush Tax Cuts For Wealthy Will Not Be Extended, Period
ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE -- The White House is insisting President Barack Obama will not extend the Bush-era tax cuts for wealthier Americans even temporarily.
Obama spokesman Jay Carney said the president has been clear in his opposition to extending tax cuts for households with annual incomes above $250,000.
.............
Carney's stand came after former President Bill Clinton caused a political headache for the White House by suggesting in an interview that tax cuts for people of all incomes including the rich should be extended into 2013 to avoid economic harm and allow time for a broader fiscal deal.
Pressed directly on whether Obama would support a temporary extension, Carney said: "He will not. Could I be more clear?

(10,622 posts)that way combined with a payroll tax holiday (one repaid in full to the SS TF of course).
Would have fixed the actual budget crises without having to create the SS grabbing, top tax rate cutting "broadening the base" circus that was the simpson/bowles fiasco.
Such an approach would have lessened, not increased the wealth disparity we currently SO enjoy.
Still not to late to employ such sanity
rather than the insanity repeatedly put forth to one degree or other from both parties.

(37,305 posts)The "marriage penalty" wil reappear the chunk of the child tax credit will disappear, rates on capital gains and income will increase as will tax rates in general.
Americans will need to cut back spending. But that is the way it is.

(57,936 posts)This spreads the austerity. The Republicans only wanted to impose it on the old, the very young, the poor, the lower middle class.
This spreads it across the board. If they don't want to do away with all the tax cuts, let the Republicans negotiate some alternative to protect middle class tax cuts.
Of course they won't. They don't care about the middle class or the poor.
All the tax cuts have to go, including those on capital gains. They should revert back to what they were before the Bush tax cuts.
If we want to make taxation fairer, we can tweak the tax code after that.
But right now, the rich are walking away with too large a share of the wealth of the nation, and the Bush tax cuts are part of the reason.

(4,113 posts)Four years ago we heard Obama talk this way across the country. Spoke like a real populist who's going to end this nonsense of attacking countries that accomplishes nothing but funnels money into the MIC's pockets and creates more terrorists bent on harming us. We were going to see the end of business as we know it in Washington. The fundamental causes of the Great Recession on Wall Street are still in place and we are seeing a continued effort to eliminate the safety nets that would have made the Great Recession into the Great Depression II had they not been in place. We saw an extension of the Bush tax cuts that are the leading cause of our federal deficit.
We're seeing the obscenely rich get richer faster at the expense of the middle and lower classes.
So, you'll have to pardon me if I seem skeptical.

(53,661 posts)Movement to stop the Bush tax cuts from expiring, put their stooges in to threaten everything from UE to SS to Obamacare. Now a lot of those people are off UE one way or the other. Obama has ignored the GOP's next wet dream, war with Iran.
Geithner already threatened the GOP regarding their actions in May; Obama has been quoted saying September will be a crucial month. We've got our work cut out for us. Don't forget, there'll be another GOP October surprise, following a long, hot summer of politics.
Just my humble opinion. N/T

(18,652 posts)I do think he's not using his bully pulpit enough to convince the electorate of his stand on things like the public option and energy independence via wind, solar and biofuels. He doesn't fight enough and his power of persuasion has been weak.
He needs to FIGHT but maybe being in the cushy bubble of the presidency is causing him a skewed view of the world. He should take a trip to Anacostia, which is all of a 10 min. drive from him in DC, to remind himself how some people are living, including little kids.
