(CNN) -- Eighteen victims of child pornography were rescued during a nationwide sweep by federal law enforcement agencies, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced Friday.

The sweep, dubbed Operation Orion, resulted in the arrests of 190 individuals. Most of them were in the U.S., but some were in Argentina, the Philippines, Spain and the United Kingdom, ICE said in a news release. The operation took place from May 1 to May 31.

The arrests were made in 33 states and Puerto Rico, authorities said.

Some of the victims were residing in the homes of the persons arrested, ICE spokeswoman Danielle Bennett said.

HSI arrests 190 child predators, rescues 18 victims during Operation Orion

WASHINGTON — One hundred and ninety individuals were arrested and 18 victims identified and rescued by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents during a month-long, nationwide operation targeting individuals who possessed, received, transported, distributed, advertised or produced images or videos of child pornography.

"With the advent of summer vacation, children may have more time and access to the Internet, making this a good time to talk to them about online dangers. Many of the child exploitation cases under Operation Orion began with a child or teen chatting with someone he or she met online," said ICE Director John Morton. "Let this operation be a warning to anyone who would think they can use the Internet to exploit children: we are out there looking for you, we will find you, and you will be prosecuted."

Operation Orion took place May 1 to 31. Arrests were made by HSI special agents and partner law enforcement agencies. The majority of arrests were made throughout the United States, but also included arrests in Spain, the Philippines, Argentina and the United Kingdom.

2. I hope those kids can get adequate mental counseling and follow-thru

This kind of shit has gone on for years. The invention of the camera just made it easier; rather than actually violate kids, they could look at pics and imagine it, then VHS made that easier to distribute, then CDs, and now a few clicks can take anyone to virtually any of it. And no doubt child sex IRL can be purchased in virtually any city or small town in the USA.

We are back to a primal, instinctual world where people are ruthless and the less powerful are nothing more than lesser-thans that can be used and abused and then thrown away when they've outlived their usefulness. Not just child-porn "actors," but anyone with a skill than can be somewhat done for a tiny expenditure in any poor country.

I tend to see shit like this as indicative to some degree of what has happened to the American work force. Take away their dignity, their self-direction, their freedom, and they have no choice but to follow along if for no other reason than their will to survive.

We are heading into a time nearly identical to the ones that brought about the need for UNIONS in the first place.

Maybe that was OT, but using another for pure profit and throwing them away once their usefulness is gone is definitely a REPUBLICAN value.

but I am very wary of the claims from enforcement agencies who have a history of exagerating their claims.

Customs and the FBI were responsible for dozens of falsely accused British men committing suicide after being falsely accused along with the publicity generated when they refused to accept credit card details could be pilfered on the internet (despite a few years later advising net users of the very same crime).

That said- I will wait for the trials and if convicted, will join in the condemnation of the perps.
