Navy: Unmanned aircraft crashes on Eastern Shore (Maryland)

Source: Baltimore Sun

The Navy says an unmanned aircraft has crashed on Maryland's Eastern Shore and there are no injuries.

A spokeswoman for the Patuxent River Naval Air Station's Unmanned Aviation and Strike Weapons program says a 44-foot unmanned aircraft on a routine maintenance flight crashed near Bloodsworth Island around noon Monday.

U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Jonathan Lindberg says the Coast Guard is setting up a safety zone around the marshy area.

CNN has a few more details:

Navy drone crashes in Maryland

(CNN) -- A U.S. Navy drone crashed Monday in marshy area near Salisbury, Maryland, military officials said.

The unmanned RQ-4A Global Hawk drone went down during a routine training flight from Naval Air Station Patuxent River, according to Jamie Cosgrove, a spokeswoman for the Unmanned Aviation and Strike Weapons Program at the base.

The drone crashed into a tributary of the Nanticoke River, according a U.S. Coast Guard official. The crash site has been blocked to recreational boat traffic while the agency investigates, according to the Coast Guard official.

That energy could be productive. We could have good schools and healthcare. But no, we've got people in rooms sitting behind joysticks, testing out their new hydraulic circuit. Or whatever they were doing. Whatever it was it was counterproductive to a society in need.

I will not change my stance on this. And it isn't smart ass.

I'm proud that my great uncles were conscientious objectors in World War 1. There is nothing good about war or the money spent to support it. Every dollar spent on it is a dollar not spent on productive and helpful efforts. And that doesn't even take into account the massive ecological damage done.

He was a navigator and electronic warfare officer with expertise in radar countermeasures. And he hated war. He felt the best offense was a good DEFENSE.

Military dollars paid for my education via his paychecks.

A person can serve in the military and NOT be a warmongering thug. My dad was a feminist before it was cool, and a Democrat from a family of Democrats. His military career brought him out of poverty.

Oh, and his death from cancer at age 47 may very well have had something to do with exposure to Agent Orange during the Vietnam War.

But go right ahead hating military folks.

The Navy only has two of 'em, apparently (pic above is a USAF one) --and one crashed. They aren't cheap.

Just saying! Especially since they tend to recruit avid video game players, who probably have the mentality that they have multiple lives.

I can tell you that the training they go through is pretty much second to none and that they take their jobs very seriously. The idea that they are a bunch of slackers who's best claim to fame is being good at Halo is, to put it bluntly, stupid.

The only difference is that they don't die if their craft does. Of course, the old career can take a mortal hit, but that's not quite the same.
