During an appearance on Fox News Monday afternoon, Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) announced that the state will sue the Department of Homeland Security to obtain access to a database that it believes will provide more accurate information on the citizenship status of Florida voters.
The Floridas Secretary of State office wil be filing a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security to give us that database, Scott said. We want to have fair, honest elections in our state and so we have been put in a position that we have to sue the federal government to get this information. The move comes after Scott disregarded a request from the Department of Justice on Wednesday to abandon efforts to purge eligible voters

(562 posts)And you lose it if you lose the case.
State of Florida can get it from their right-wing billionaries if they really believe that the purge is good for Florida.
The $100 million will then be disbursed to the poor of the State of Florida, individually.

(38,458 posts)So this lawsuit looks like a particularly aggressive position to get the info that Republican Election Supervisors say
they need. They will not move forward, publically rebuking the asshole, but he doubles down, like they all do, so he does not
look foolish to all. He doesn't care about a waste of money, as long as he can waste it his way. Not on education..

Illegal, NON-CITIZEN? Nope just the STUPIDITY of Rick Scott regarding people moving OUT of Florida, and assuming they still do. Imagine all the issues with SNOWBIRDS?

(5,610 posts)IF the DOJ ( lol...what bullshit) were in the least bit interested, they could prove that the Walker recall election was "fixed." Really, when you have more people who signed a petition for his recall than voted for him in the first place...
I have seriously been thinking about writing a "primer" for American children. They have no idea of what America used to stand for. Now (even with crime being at it's lowest levels since the 1950's) America has 5%of the worlds population and 25% of the worlds prisoners. They should be taught how to survive in this (not) brave, new, corporate country. Perhaps they could even let their parents read it.
Even though America stood for valiant ideals, we never realized them. Now, the corporatism that is "our" political system, guarantees that we never will realize the freedom that we once stood for. Fortunately, the older nations have citizens that have endured centuries of serfdom and caste systems, etc. and they became tough enough to seize and demand their rights.
From "the great experiment" to the boil on the ass of humanity, American exceptionalism.

(1,144 posts)Do they support this ideologue trying to remove minorities and democrats from the rolls? What does the Florida media have to say about it?
It's all well and good for me to get outraged in Pennsylvania, but ultimately the Florida voters will either endorse or reject this action.

(17,064 posts)At his lowest popularity, Scott Walker had a 41% approval rating. A rating that high would.be a breakthrough for Rick Scott. His numbers have ranged from the mid twenties to mid thirties, currently 31%. If hes not the least popular governor, then I dont know who is.

DallasNE
(7,404 posts)Unless Florida uses Social Security number for the match I don't see how they can use this data. Address data is out of date. Name and date of birth will produce duplicate matches. Unless a database is built specifically to support a function you end up with garbage in, garbage out. That is the first rule of database design. Besides, Scott has never answered why they are not revising the voter registration procedures if they are allowing ineligible people to get on the voter rolls because that is where the problem would reside.
As it is, it is the wrong solution for the wrong problem using the wrong methodology. Lastly, how much is this going to cost the taxpayers of Florida. Not only will they have to bear the cost of this suit, they will have to reimburse the federal government for their expenses when they lose the lawsuit, as they surely will. Scott will come out of this with egg on his face, big time.

(5,536 posts)We have to thhink like them. The Obama administration should do the following:
1. Advise the Florida governor that he can have all citizenship data available for all current Florida residents. So please supply all these names, their current addresses, social security numbers, height, weight, skin color, mother's maiden name, gender, etc etc.
2. Advise that the US database search costs for one person to work full time to do the research will be billed to Florida in advance. Hopefully this person could be done checking 300 million plus records in a few years.
3. The results will be supplied by hard copy, one sheet per record, delivered one at a time by armored truck, expense paid for by Florida in advance.
4. All Florida officials must submit to a drug test. Why not?
5. If it is determined that Florida officials withheld names, like for instance registered Republicans, the whole process will start over and Florida will be billed again.
Hey, if they have nothing to hide .......
