LANSING, MI - A coalition of labor unions on Wednesday turned in nearly 700,000 signatures to put before voters a measure that would enshrine collective bargaining rights in the state constitution, setting the stage for a major fight in November.
Organizers needed nearly 323,000 valid signatures to qualify for the statewide ballot and submitted at least double that - 684,286 - pretty much ensuring the "Protect Our Jobs" amendment will go to voters.
The measure would prevent Michigan from becoming a right-to-work state and invalidate a number of Republican-backed laws signed since GOP Gov. Rick Snyder took office.
One of those laws, for example, limits the amount public employers may pay for employees' medical benefits to no more than 80 percent. A right-to-work law - which is opposed by Snyder but has been passed in Indiana - would prohibit mandatory participation in a union or payment of union fees as a condition of employment.
