Lieberman Proposes Special Counsel for Leaks Probe
Source: Associated Press & ABC News
Sen. Joe Lieberman says there should be a special counsel to look into allegations that the administration has leaked information on a U.S.-Israeli cyber-warfare campaign against Iran's nuclear program and other classified activities.
The Connecticut Independent also said President Barack Obama should instruct anybody on his staff involved in such leaks to come forward and that the president should himself be interviewed by investigators.
Both Democrats and Republicans have criticized apparent leaks about the cyber-warfare initiative, on Obama's selection of targets for counterterrorism assassination plots and the mission that killed Osama Bin Laden.

What a piece of work this guy is. If he is independent all Republicans must be.

(25,699 posts)Is that like the majority of American "Israel supporters," his primary concern is making sure Arabs (or in this case, Iranians) die or are otherwise "punished" for existing, and "pro-Israel" is just a cover for that.
Thus it stands to reason that he'll get his knackers in a twist when an act of espionage against Iran is exposed, rather than getting upset by the act itself.

(57,936 posts)the information about the leaks faster than anyone.
I can imagine that foreign countries are just as capable of electronic espionage that does not require a leaker as we are.
When were there more leaks than in the Bush administration and most of them initiated by Bush and Cheney themselves.
I am a strong supporter of Israel, but even I sometimes wonder what country Lieberman represents in our Congress.

(14,400 posts)he's decided to "focus on his family" instead of running for re-election. The fact that he's probably as despised as any politician could be in the State has nothing to do with it.
Last time this scumbag snuck in as an Independent because CT doesn't have a sore loser law and the CT puke party abandoned their candidate to support him.
I was really hoping he'd try running again, it would have been a lot of fun to work against him.

(15 posts)boy, I think a special counsel would be beneficial to Obama. It removes controversy, suspicion and is in step with his campaign promise of transparency. Why the concern about one here?

(57,936 posts)unlike recent presidents that preceded him, did not fire pretty much all of Bush's appointees.
And Obama has already appointed a lawyer from the Attorney General's office to investigate and prosecute the person or people responsible for the leaks.
Obama has been harder on leakers than the presidents that preceded him.
Obama can be trusted to be dispassionate and fair in this. He probably wants to find the source of the leaks more than anyone. The leaks were not done to help him, but rather to embarrass him, and the Republicans in Congress are trying to use the leaks to further embarrass Obama.
Personally, I think that the disclosures about the cyber-spying on Iran and Israel may have come from a foreign country.

(15,760 posts)They believe the Flame virus was developed by the Israelis, who informed the Obama administration.
The administration then leaked information about the virus, thus compromising national security and betraying Israeli trust in an attempt to both placate the Muslims and manage the growing threat of an Israeli strike against Iran.
They're trying to drive a wedge between US-Israel relations, claim that Obama betrayed the country, and affect Obama's fundraising efforts with the Jewish community. Thus Lieberman's proposal for a special counsel; Republicants and their toadies really want to make political hay out of a very sensitive situation.
That's what they're up to.

(57,936 posts)the virus (assuming we did) and that it would serve the interests of a third country to publicize that fact just to show that they had adequate computer competence to figure it out. Seems a little obvious that the US would be very interested in doing what was done with that code.

(2,900 posts)FBI to conduct an investigation. If it appears that the White House was the source of it, then a special council should be appointed. But we also need to consider all the other sources that this might have come from.
It's been obvious for some time that Stutnex was either Israeli or US or both. Correctly using Flame, with many of the same components would probably require the same authors to master it, at least for about 5 years after it has been studied and captured.
I don't care for Joe Lieberman at all. But this one time I do not think he is out of line. The fact that he wasn't all over the Valerie Plame leaks the same way demonstrates to me that his real loyalties are with the Republicans. But I thought that right after the Lewinsky affair.
