Lawmaker sets deadline for Holder to avoid contempt citation

Source: Reuters

By Donna Smith
WASHINGTON | Tue Jun 19, 2012 7:42pm EDT

(Reuters) - U.S. House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said on Tuesday that he would move forward with a contempt citation against Attorney General Eric Holder unless Holder turns over documents by Wednesday morning involving a botched operation to track guns smuggled to Mexico.

Holder said after meeting Issa late on Tuesday afternoon that he thought he had made a fair offer to provide documents and a briefing to the committee.

"The ball is in their court," Holder said. "They rejected what I thought was an extraordinary offer on our part."

He said the Justice Department would provide the materials and answer questions about them as long as the committee considered that as satisfying its earlier subpoena.

1. Issa will never be satisfied.

He really doesn't want any documents. He wants the political talking point. I heard today on Politics Nation that if he is held in contempt it will then go to court and will take months to reach a conclusion.

Issa first isn't blaming the guy who started this operation but the guy who ended it, second he asked for items which would be illegal (per Bush administration) to turn over, now he is asking for types of documents which have never been turned over and they said they would. It is plain and simple. He wants the poetical talking point.

not only gave him the political talking point, but gave him that political talking point in an election year. This has been going on for almost EIGHTEEN months now.

Here is a link to the LA Times, which is hardly a right wing paper with a long list of stories on this travesty.

It is disturbing how many people here are willing to ignore the deaths of a Border Patrol agent and hundreds of Mexican citizens because it won't fit into their political worldview.

13. The LA Times is to right-wing for me. The readers are liberal, but the paper is not.

They fired Robert Scheer years ago. A few years ago, they announced on the editorial page that they were going to print more right-wing letters to the editor. Seems they were getting too many letters they considered to be left-wing. They did not follow through with that policy as I understand it. I don't think that the people of Los Angeles who tend to vote Democratic in large numbers would have stood for it.

On the other hand, the LA Times took forever to print a story on the Downing Street memos. When they were so slow, I canceled my subscription (which I had kept up for years). When they did print a story, it was not on the first page, not on the first page where they had printed all the falsehoods the Bush administration told to get us involved in Iraq.

8. Have they ever identified who created or signed off on the operation?

I remember DOJ firing and transferring some ATF people when this first started but have never seen anything saying there might be some responsibility on the DOJ side. In this specific case I really do feel that they are hiding something.

For not going after Republicans the same way when he should have.

Looking forward, not backward only works one way apparently.

The Obama administration needs to treat Republican demands the same way the Bush administration treated Democratic demands. Ignore them and claim executive privilege over everything. Or maybe offer to answer questions without being under oath with no record of the proceedings taken or kept.

When will Democrats stop being patsies for these Republican assholes? I hope NOW.

If, Obama should loose, the Democrats won't block Romney the way the Republicans have blocked Obama.

I have always felt turnabout is fair play.

I hope the next time we have a Republican in the WH if they do not have a majority in the House and a super majority in the Senate, Democrats do exactly what the Republicans are doing today. It may just take standing up to the jerks to make them see what it is like.

written all over it... The ATF allowed criminals to buy guns, the ATF lost track of 1700 of the guns and agent(s) were
killed with those specific guns... there is not a good spin to put on that...

I understood that it was actually a Bush administration project that was continued under Obama.

Obama's only mistake in this was to fail to completely review and carefully question every program that Bush put in place.

Or was this started under Obama? I don't think so.

They don't want anything from Holder except the opportunity to talk shit. Let the sons-of-bitches talk. Issa and his crew have been trying to punk Holder at every turn. He ain't biting. That's all they know how to do anyway. Talk and block progress. Well, I say, "Let them." If the bullshit they spew is enough to stop someone from voting for their own best interest, let them vote against it. I know Holder and President Obama feel like men trying to save a drowning person who insists on taking them down with them.

Of course they want to tie up the DOJ so they can further their voter suppression agenda. Of course they're looking for an issue. They chose this because they couldn't grab hold to anything else. And the assholes don't even have a grip on this. It doesn't matter that this operation started under fucking Bush. No one wants to talk about that. Do we care about the boarder patrolman who lost his life? Of course we do. But that's not what they want to investigate and seek justice. They are just like the kids you went to school with who talked shit all the time and said nothing.

Yeah I thought it began under Bush. I still cannot understand why the ATF was trying to inject more weapons into an arena where all the players are all already armed to the teeth. I wonder if they were trying to track distribution of weapons into Mexico but bungled it. Been a while since I have drilled down on this. Whatever this was from the Bush regime, it was pretty crackheaded imo.

I can't stand Holder and no way should he step down to appease that bastard. As soon as he does, they go after someone else and then it's Obama's "corrupt administration" til Election Day.
