Americans Say They’re Better Off Since Obama Took Office
Source: Bloomberg News
A plurality of Americans now say they are better off than they were when President Barack Obama was inaugurated, providing a surprising lift to Obamas re- election campaign despite troublesome economic news.
Forty-five percent of those surveyed in a Bloomberg National Poll say they are better off than at the beginning of 2009 compared with 36 percent who say they are worse off. In March, poll respondents split almost evenly on that question after having been decidedly negative since the aftermath of the worst recession in seven decades.
Im just tired of the doom and gloom, says Jim Seeley, 52, a mortgage banker in Traverse City, Michigan, and a poll respondent, in a follow-up interview. I think its looking better. People just need to stay positive.
The poll, conducted June 15-18, contains more unlikely cheer for the president, with larger numbers of respondents saying their household income is higher than a year ago. While 44 percent say they are treading water, the better off outnumbered the worse off by 28 percent to 22 percent.

(4,113 posts)I never realized how racist this area is until Obama was elected president. They refuse to believe the job market has improved. They cry about the federal spending, but where were those concerns when Bush turned it around from budget surpluses to record deficits. They bitch that they're paying more taxes when the opposite is the case. And then these ignoramuses will listen to their RW talk shows and Faux Snooze to reinforce what they want to believe. I actually heard someone say they watch Faux Snooze because of this. They have no desire to learn.
Bottom line--The dumbing down of America is in full bloom right now. We can thank the 20-plus years of RW slanted media for that.

(758 posts)All it takes is 15 minutes of Fox to convince people that our country as we know it is coming to an end. There was an article in our paper today about people fearful of being bombed by armed drones in our own country. Wonder where they got that idea. Yes, it's true, Fox conflated drones with hell fire missiles being used in Pakistan to those be used by the EPA for surveillance purposes. Gee, what's there to be frightened of all you idiots that believe what you hear on Fox?

(24,464 posts)let alone a steady diet of it, you'd think that we're already in the throes of an evil socialist dictatorship run by President Obama- despite all evidence to the contrary.

(8,292 posts)3 yrs ago, I was desperate to return to the states. (We lived in Germany). Spouse managed to get a job and it lifted us out of debt and we lived comfortably in the meantime. Last month, the pink slip arrived and he has until the end of the year to finish this project and find another job. STRESS is not the best word to describe how we feel. This is only a second round of living on the edge like we did from '07-'09 and frankly, we're sick of it. I will say at least this time, we're better prepared financially and emotionally because we survived the first round.
Our plans are to go to the UK or Europe and not have to worry about medical bankruptcy. No where is job security something you can plan anymore so we want to at least be able to go somewhere and live out the rest of his working life (15 yrs) with a social safety net in case it gets worse rather than better. Unfortunately, you can't get that in this country anymore.
This survey gives me hope for re-election.

(19,458 posts)Those jobs are most likely not coming back, because they were automated, shipped to India and China, or the work is being done by temps or by entrepreneurs. The job market is an entirely different situation. Doens't matter how good the President does, those jobs are not coming back.. thanks to the investors and the corporate takeover of America. Heck.. 30 people in one day? That's pretty low compared to 2007 and 2008.
Oh, and why in the world would a business pay a bookkeeper $8.00 an hour? You can clean a fast food burger place for $11.00 an hour.

(45,851 posts)There are people with bookkeeping knowledge who are willing to work at that price, as the poster pointed out, they got applicants with advanced education and experience.
Plenty of business owners are hard nosed skinflints who will not pay one cent more than they absolutely have to for anything, that's a type that tends to do well in a great many areas of business.

(19,458 posts)Seriously. Everyone I know has bought a new car in the past year. Everyone. Many have bought homes. My realtor is selling 4 to 5 (non foreclosure) homes a week this year. My husband's company has added 15 employees since 2010. Many of my unemployed friends are working good jobs... and when i was looking I got a lot of call backs for interviews, and such.
This is why Romney is NOW saying that Obama doesn't get any credit for the economy, when last week he said that the bad economy was his fault. Someone needs to make a Romney weathervane. Seriously.

(1,214 posts)I know it is not his fault. I pay attention and I have heard the Republicans telling people like me that our financial troubles are our own fault, that if we really wanted a job we could find one, that more of the same crap that put us here will eventually get us out (when in a hole, keep digging?), and I've also heard them say that they want to stop Obama from succeeding at anything, including improving the economy.
So, even though I would not have answered this poll positively, I feel positively about our President because I know he is trying to solve the problems that the Republicans would like to keep in place solely for political reasons.
