BERNIE SANDERS: Almost 7,000 of my supporters just signed up to run for office.
Bernie Sanders has inspired thousands of supporters to express interest in running for political office.
After the Vermont senator made an impassioned plea to his supporters during a Thursday-night webcast to carry the "political revolution" forward, his campaign released a statement claiming that nearly 6,700 of his people said that they'd be interested in seeking elected office.
The supporters went to a portal on Sanders' campaign website, BernieSanders.com/win, and signed up to receive more information about running at the local or state level.
The campaign said that roughly 11,000 expressed interest in either running or volunteering to help other Sanders supporters run.
The Democratic presidential hopeful, who has yet to suspend his campaign - although the primary season has ended and he's won fewer pledged delegates than presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton - called the response "extraordinary."
"I have no doubt that with the energy and enthusiasm our campaign has shown that we can win significant numbers of local and state elections if people are prepared to become involved," Sanders said in the release. "This will be part of transforming our country from the bottom on up."
To express interest, supporters had to enter only their name, email, phone number, and address and select if they wanted to either run for office or volunteer for others. Supporters were also given the option of answering how they've been involved in Sanders' movement and to provide more information about themselves.

(182 posts)and get rid of the voting machines, the one's that flip the votes.
We need campaign reform, and no superdelegates, because superdelegates were not chosen democratically, and do not have to answer to any electorate for their decisions. Bernie Sanders had a 22 percent win over Hillary Clinton in the New Hampshire primaries. It was huge, but despite the fact that Hillary suffered the second biggest defeat in New Hampshire's history, both candidates got from New Hampshire 15 delegates. The whole point of superdelegates is to give the party elite more control over the primary process. Then get rid of the electoral college, and try true democracy, and eliminate the electoral system altogether.

(3,072 posts)I think Sanders is right when he says that we have spent so much time focusing on winning the presidency that we have forgotten about lower level offices. Its time to take back our rightful place from the republican dickholes

They signed up asking for info about running. Info they could easily have gotten from their local party, should they have asked. And info they will still have to go to their local party for if they decide to stick a toe in the waters.
It is indeed a good thing having more people interested, but what are Bernie's plans for keeping them interested in the future? How does he plan on keeping "the movement" from fizzling out, like so many others have?
Many of us here have been in this for the long haul, have worked thanklessly on many campaigns, and have indeed run for office ourselves. We have noticed that many of those fresh new faces register shock at certain realities, and never come back.
It would be nice if Bernie stuck around to hold some hands, or built a real organization to keep the faith around the tough times.

(55,981 posts)are predicting when Hillary and the Republicons get together. More jobs overseas, less taxes for the billionaires, more wars for profits, more Prison For Profits, no medical marijuana, no living min wage. Clinton is tough, too bad she is tough on the 99%. But it is a class war and her with her $150,000,000 clearly isn't on the side of the working class.

(43,049 posts)There are many people here who have actually been involved in running and campaigning, and in their local parties and clubs. It can get terribly depressing when you knocked on a thousand doors, put up hundreds of signs, shook uncountable hands, and lost.
Those are the tough times I'm talking about, and every one who has actually run for office (yes, I did once) knows them well. running the hardest work you'll ever do, and if you do win, you suddenly realize that you are still running for the next election.
So, pull yourself out of that microcosm of partisan BS and introduce yourself to the outside world.

(241 posts)and read what you write. It's garbage. You actually want people to become less interested in politics. You sound like a republican. Why don't you take that to fox news where someone might appreciate it.
TreasonousBastard
(43,049 posts)I still slog on knocking on doors because i believe in the process and I care about my town and county.
But I've seen too many people show up with stars in their eyes not realizing what it's like and wash out.
So, come up with ways to keep them out there working or shut the fuck up.

(241 posts)What do you think Bernie is trying to do by setting up this website and getting people interested? Better than the DNC has ever done. Better than you have obviously ever done. Just because you aren't built to be a politician doesn't mean other people aren't. Bernie Sanders is 74 years old. Hillary Clinton is 69. And they are both still out there doing it. Don't tell me it can't be done. Only a republican would sway people to not get involved. And I don't appreciate you trying to dissuade young democrats from trying to make meaningful change. Its disgusting.

(43,049 posts)A website is not an election. It's not GOTV. It's not fundraising dinners or Meet the Candidate brunches.
Around here we are way past Bernie and his antics. We have a Congressional seat to win back and a President to elect, and we've been doing this for a long time. Bernie is completely irrelevant to the process at this point.
Any Berniacs who find us through his announcement or website are welcome to join the fight, but most of them have already heard of us through our local efforts.
Tomorrow, I will be out collecting signatures for our Congressional primary and passing out literature. That's after I put in 4 or 5 hours at my job.
What will you be doing besides lecturing your elders on an internet board?
ThinkCritically
(241 posts)I'm glad you discount the hard work of other people as simply "antics". You've run for office, right? Did you have 12+ million votes? Didn't think so. People like YOU are becoming irrelevant. Nearly every person under the age of 50 has a computer connected to the internet. Why would you waste so many hours to no avail trying to get out information with brochures? How about moving into the 21st century and spreading important information around to the people who need it the most through channels that actually reach them? Guess what. Bernie setup that network already and has millions of supporters. He received the most individual donations to a presidential campaign in US history. I'm gonna go ahead and say I think Bernie may be light years ahead of you. Thanks for your lecture though. It pointed out how out of date you are.
TreasonousBastard
(43,049 posts)Just about everybody I know over 50 has a computer, too. A smartphone, even. And a tablet sitting around. We just don't spend that much time on Facebook, cat videos, or hookup sites. Well, OK, a few cat videos, and there's one good hookup site we keep secret...
Some of us actually do work on our computers. Get paid for it, too.
Most of the people actually running things around here are over 50. And you know what us old farts did?
There's a room in a Fishers Island mansion where we have 69 Millennials with their brains wired together working on a secret project to discover the secret of how to get the roughly 70% of the population without internet access, or who have it but don't use it for anything political, to get their dead asses out to vote by using the internet.
They've said they'll have an answer in a week. They've been saying that for 14 weeks.
Meanwhile, we're still having our dinners and brunches and GOTV vans. And knocking on doors.
ThinkCritically
(241 posts)The people who Bernie brought into politics are. If you don't like that he is doing that, well, then keep doing what you do. But don't try to hold other people back at the same time. That is my original complaint with you. It makes absolutely no sense to squash others attempts to get people involved in politics. Whenever that happens, democrats win. I bet you didn't even consider the difference it actually makes for our party when new people come into politics. Bernie is a living example. He not only brought in 45 and younger voters, which is historically difficult, he brought in a HUGE portion of independents who decided to vote democrat. Tell me that is a negative for our party and I'll tell you to retire and just vote. That's all. Sit back and vote for the next democrat is all you need to do. We appreciate your service.

(8,846 posts)I've seen members of my local DEC refuse to sign petitions to help get a candidate on the ballot. I've looked up campaign contribution reports, and seen the same people (DEC members) donating to Republicans when we had a well qualified Democrat running.
TreasonousBastard
(43,049 posts)I've been on two local town committees and yet another club. All of them are actually working, amazingly enough, but two of the clubs are really incredible and showing great growth and enthusiasm.
Alas, the town I'm living in now is a bit confused. We're getting the basics together, but not much more than that. At least we're not scaring away people. Well, not too many people. And we don't have much of a club here, so I spend time with the other two.
If you're in one of those moribund local organizations, the only thing I can say is stay in contact with whoever you can find-- one of our local committees was asleep way for years and then got a new chairman who made it take off. Wasn't easy in that Republican town, but it can be done and it feels great when it happens.
Don't know enough to comment on your local committee, but I've seen that sort of thing go both ways. Usually they just join the party for some personal reason, but to get on the committee is going too far.

(989 posts)They will place candidate of their ilk on ballots as Democrats so they effectively have GOP candidates running for all positions. There was even a program on one of the radio stations that interviewed (NPR, i think) a GOP supporters who was running as a Democrat. He was asked if that weren't illegal or unfair. His reply was "NO" it was smart politics.

(989 posts)and it takes time and organization. And it should take knowledge of the position that you are seeking, That said, this kind of movement is what really will make change. It can turn several red state blue or purple.
I am a Hillary supporter to the end, but "Hats off" to Bernie and his movement for doing this.
