Powerful congressman accused of campaign finance violations
Source: CNN
Republican Rep. Vern Buchanan, a self-made Florida millionaire, is only in his third term in Congress, but he already is in charge of fundraising for the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee, and he sits on the powerful House Ways and Means committee.
But all that could be jeopardized. Federal investigations underway could result in Buchanan serving his next term behind bars.
CNN has confirmed there are no fewer than four congressional and federal investigations into Buchanan's business practices, his campaign finances and his alleged attempt to try to stop a witness from talking.
Now that witness is stepping forward in an exclusive interview with CNN. Buchanan's former business partner says the congressman schemed to launder money from his car dealerships into his campaign coffers, and then tried to get others to cover it up.

(5,818 posts)of an incumbent Republican can use this scandal:
"How much money have you gotten from the RCCC. Was that money laundered by Vern Buchanan after coming from illegal sources? Will you make all your contributions public online the moment you receive them?"
Just imagine what Republican "quids pro quo" could be uncovered with extra disclusre stemming from this scandal. We just might get those 25 seats after all.

(26,368 posts)but they often fail to take into account the other key areas which the republicans have focused on which is the state level elected positions and the courts.
By having majority control over those and especially the state level elected positions the republicans are able to gerrymander themselves more power, sadly though there is no quick fix for the problem.

(135,425 posts)ones. I always try to vote the cronies out, and the change-makers in. I don't succeed, but the cronies know that they don't "own" the seat.
It all starts at the local level, and it takes time. It's like raising a child. The efforts made starting in kindergarten won't bear fruit for decades, but the sooner you start, the sooner you'll eventually see results.
I get irritated at people who wake up and vote every four years. I suppose it's better than not voting at all, but I'd like to see more people at the polls in the off years. Hell, sometimes it seems like the only people who vote in local elections are the old folks I drive there!
