I think it can be challenging and painful for any community to confront the worst aspects of its culture or the worst persons among them, but I also think that refusing to do so on the basis that you or your pals don't personally oppress LGBT serves the worst elements in any community or culture.

Any actual righteous person of faith would need to see those being harmed as the important factor in the story. Most people who study religion- actual historians, anthropologists and theologians alike- can agree that faith is a personal matter. That MAN wrote every holy book every written. That faith is belief in the absence of any kind of physical proof.

We alter religious doctrine, all the time, for social and political reasons. I can't tell ya how many times I've argued with people about how absolute the "word of God" is. Like it's not the King James VERSION of the Bible vs the translations of the original. "Virgin" at the time of Mary meant any young woman of age to wed and not her sexual status, yet people continue to superimpose their modern meaning of the word in order to suit their purposes.
