Group vies to make homosexuality a crime in Maine

Source: Bangor Daily News

AUGUSTA, Maine — Mike Heath and other former heads of the Christian Civic League of Maine have formed a new group, “Equal Rights, not Special Rights,” in an effort to remove protections for LGBT Mainers from the Maine Equal Rights Act.

They said they’re tired of being forced to accept the homosexual lifestyle.

Paul Madore and this small group of people say they want to restore America to its former greatness by repealing same sex marriage laws and making homosexuality a crime.

“There is conduct that ought to be punished,” Heath said. “And Christianity teaches, has always taught and still does teach, that sodomy is such a behavior.”

Why are they "being forced to accept the homosexual lifestyle?" It doesn't affect their lives. Christianity teaches so much more than sodomy is a behavior. It also teaches "Love thy neighbor as thyself." What a bunch of freaken hypocrites. I would love to see how they would react if one of their beloved children came out as gay. The Bible also teaches not to eat shellfish. No more lobsters for you!!!!

Bullshit. Pfft.

And they probably fantasize about getting some anal but their wives won't go for it (probably cause they're jerks and generally selfish, uncaring lovers).

They also probably LOVE them some girl-on-girl pronz too.

As a side note, I'm fairly certain there's a decent-sized contingent of gay couples who do not perform (these guys definition of sodomy), I just have to wonder ... are those ones 'okay' in their book, cause they aren't 'Sodomites'? I somehow doubt it.

Bottom-line, these hypocritical a-holes need to STFU.

religions are actually wonderful and the people actually made by the creator contain the actual defects. This borders on heresy, if we are being religious, to put human creation above the creation of God negates the entire premise of religion, does it not?

I think it can be challenging and painful for any community to confront the worst aspects of its culture or the worst persons among them, but I also think that refusing to do so on the basis that you or your pals don't personally oppress LGBT serves the worst elements in any community or culture.

This OP, by the way, is about actively sought laws to oppress LGBT pitched by religious people. Any actual righteous person of faith would need to see those being harmed as the important factor in the story. A faith that says 'attitudes toward me are more important than actions against others' is empty and without value of any kind.

45. This "back in the closet" quote makes no sense....
Sat Jul 9, 2016, 01:13 PM
Jul 2016

They can't have it both ways. Either sodomy is akin to, say, murder and you can't do it even in the closet, or what they want isn't to criminalize homosexuality, just keep from seeing or hearing about it. In which case, it's not a crime to engage in it, just to be public about it....

I mean, it's illegal for anyone, heterosexual or not, to have sex in a public place. So...if all they really want is for homosexuality to remain secret, then what they're really arguing for is to restrain free speech. If, of course, on the other hand they want to criminalize homosexuality, then they have to prove why it should be a crime, and "because it's in the Bible" doesn't suffice. Because, well, other amendment about freedom of religion. They can't impose their religious beliefs on others or use those beliefs to create laws that do likewise.

By the by, I'm just riffing away on this quote. Fact of the matter is that there is never any common sense in demands like these--the ones crying out about "special privileges" and their freedoms being denied in giving others their freedom. What they say and argue always boils down to the same thing: getting rid of anything that makes them feel uncomfortable, or takes away their power to be exactly they way they want to be (bigoted) whether that is right or not. Whether that is fair or not. Whether that is legal or not. Whether that is constitutional or not.

It's nonsense. It's always nonsense. And here's hoping that most citizens of Maine agree.

Sat Jul 9, 2016, 01:28 PM

Most people who study religion- actual historians, anthropologists and theologians alike- can agree that faith is a personal matter. That MAN wrote every holy book every written. That faith is belief in the absence of any kind of physical proof.

We alter religious doctrine, all the time, for social and political reasons. I can't tell ya how many times I've argued with people about how absolute the "word of God" is. Like it's not the King James VERSION of the Bible vs the translations of the original. "Virgin" at the time of Mary meant any young woman of age to wed and not her sexual status, yet people continue to superimpose their modern meaning of the word in order to suit their purposes.

But, thats what this is all about. God is a convenient argument from authority. They don't have to defend their beliefs or even justify em... just pass the buck to a being that may or may not actually exist and certainly isn't gonna show up in person to defend their point of view.

Personally? I think if we have a creator, they have better sh*t to do than worry about consensual sex between loving adults.
