Theresa May to become British prime minister in fast-track political transition
Source: Washington Post
LONDON Prime Minister David Cameron said Monday he would step down in two days, clearing the way for Theresa May to become Britains next leader as the country plots its exit from the European Union.
The announcement by Cameron came just hours after Mays only rival in the race to succeed Cameron Energy Minister Andrea Leadsom unexpectedly abandoned her campaign, saying the country could not afford a drawn-out political contest and needed to launch quickly into the complicated bargaining with the European Union over the split.
Cameron said he would step down on Wednesday, opening the way for May to take the keys to 10 Downing Street far sooner than anyone had expected.
Im delighted that Theresa May will be the next prime minister. She is strong, she is competent, she is more than able to provide the leadership that our country is going to need in the years ahead, and she will have my full support, said Cameron.

(14,749 posts)Cameron is stepping down after leading us into a disastrous referendum on the EU, and Theresa May was the sanest candidate on offer from the Tories for cleaning up the mess they've caused.
Which is not saying much I know.

Teresa May, by contrast, is a glamour model and adult film star, famous for such films as Tit Raider, the documentary Shag, Gobble and Spunk and Nylon Naughties vol 14.
Britain might be interested in politics all of a sudden but that doesnt mean weve all learned to spell.

(13,616 posts)If Scotland finally breaks away. Of course, the ramifications of THAT will be the match that lights the powder, as many of the brexit types are looking to North America (not just the U.S.) to be their "special relationship" that gives them support, but Scotland and a united Ireland could cut that off. of course, this is where Putin could, if he wants to escalate matters, try to establish relations with the Celts as a one up for the Ukraine; that would be dangerous, as nothing would ignite a war like the English screaming "help Help, the Russians are coming" to Uncle Sam. Add to that Madame le Pen is very much an admirer of Putin, and we could have yet another European diplomatic fuck up become a war.

(101,421 posts)The run-off system in France makes that quite hard - she will probably get to the final 2, and could be the most popular candidate in the first round, but enough of the rest of the people will vote for whomever is the non-Le Pen candidate, even if they're from an opposing party to the voter, to keep out Le Pen.
