Obamacare Ruling Put Off Until Thursday
Source: Medpage
WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court did not issue a decision on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on Monday. The fate of the landmark law will not be known until the court's final session on Thursday.
Reporters and court-watchers waited on pins and needles for the ACA decision on Monday morning, but the court issued other rulings instead.
Technically, the court could put off the decision until next term, but experts say that is very unlikely.
On Thursday, the court could rule in one of three ways concerning the individual mandate, which requires everyone to have health insurance:

That will be politically very helpful.

Too bad Dem's don't bother with things like co-ordinated messaging or talking points. On that sad note, I want Howard Dean running the DNC again....

It will be all we can do to save Medicare.

Here it is. Read it and weep:

(23,500 posts)I can't imagine what sort of executive order Obama could issue on this that would not also be overturned by the Supremes.
The article you posted doesn't say much.

(14,881 posts)The Supreme Court didn't overturn his immigration action, and their decision this week supports it. And I don't expect Obama to play his hand until the time is right.
There may be a way that an executive order or some other little used / little known mechanism would enable him to change the rules on Medicare enrollment. (That's why I'm hoping for, myself, as an incremental step towards single payer.) Unless you are a constitutional and government scholar with massive research resources at your fingertips, the odds are there is far more that you don't know about what he can do, than that you do know.
Who knows? But the things we do know are that 1. there is always something you can do, 2. Obama has shown in recent weeks he's not going to roll up into a ball and die, and 3. he's not wasting time on the "bully pulpit" that the media is always crowing about.
#3 is a particularly important thing because 1. we know the media likes to just ignore him or look for ways to dismiss or diminish him, and 2. action speaks far, far louder than words. The media can't ignore his actions, and 3. this gives him a huge advantage over Mittens' millions and billions of Citizens United donations.
Mittens can spend a fortune advertising. But Obama can still overwhelm and dominate him, and totally define him through *action.* He's already put Mittens on the defensive on gay rights and immigration. I expect him to now keep Mittens on the defensive by repeated, key actions up to and through the elections. I think he has finally had ENOUGH.
Keeping your powder dry pays off *if* you let it fly at the right time. And for Obama and our country, there is no time like the present.

(14,881 posts)Incremental, as slow and painful as it is, is a safer route for the overall economy.
Medicare for all, in one fell swoop, would be totally disruptive to the current system and would increase unemployment temporarily right when he needs it to drop. But phasing it in gives the insurance industry time to adjust, and companies that are paying for group insurance time to adjust, etc.
Maybe some combination of buy-in Medicare for those rejected by insurance companies and lowering the eligibility age to buy-in, or something on those lines.

I'm sure they deserve whatever karma comes their way. Maybe karma's a fairytale but to spend this short time on earth making miserable the lives of so many others sure seems a bad way to etch your existence in eternity.

(884 posts)the Democrats should have NEVER allowed health care reform to be label 'Obamacare'. More of the the theater of the abusrd from the other side and it seems we let it happen. So now just because of this people are polarized even more so, and the real issues never even get discussed amongst many people that might have otherwise been open to discussion. It's sad. People are being played like tools against each other and its bullshit. You've got Democrats calling Liberals and Progressives idiots, and the right calling us all idiots. It makes no sense to me and it if weren't for shit like this label, perhaps less people on the right would be calling us idiots. This is a fact.
In NO other country in the ENTIRE World do people not want universal healthcare. NOWHERE. Yet why here? As I said before it is not American exceptionalism that is the reason, nor are we all greedy bastards. People are not educated is the problem, common sense is gone and that is a problem. The entire World see's it, and some laugh about it even.
