Dead Baton Rouge shooter attacked police on his birthday
Source: CBS News
BATON ROUGE, La. -- The deceased suspect in the deadly shooting of Baton Rouge law enforcement officers appeared to have attacked police on his 29th birthday, CBS News has learned.
The suspect has been identified as a black male named Gavin Eugene Long of Kansas City, Missouri, sources tell CBS News. He was born on July 17, 1987.
One suspect was killed and two others might still be at large, Casey Rayborn Hicks, a spokeswoman for the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office, previously said. However, Louisiana state police said Sunday afternoon there is "no active shooter" in Baton Rouge.
The Baton Rouge Advocate reported that two other men were picked up across the Mississippi River in Addis and were being questioned by police as "persons of interest."

(49,089 posts)"what are you on about" is short for "what are you going on about".
The poster was requesting that you clarify your overly-terse post as to what you are referring to as "not good", because it seems that you were more concerned about the effect of the race of the shooter and had not expressed any sympathy for the dead.

And any expressions of sympathy, or lack thereof, - where does that come from??????????

In the late 2000s and early 2010s, most new recruits to the sovereign citizens movement are people who have found themselves in a desperate situation, often due to the economy or foreclosures, and are searching for a quick fix. Others are intrigued by the notions of easy money and living a lawless life, free from unpleasant consequences. Many self-identified sovereigns today are black and apparently completely unaware of the racist origins of their ideology. When they experience some small success at using redemption techniques to battle minor traffic offenses or local licensing issues, they're hooked. For many, it's a political issue. They don't like taxes, traffic laws, child support obligations or banking practices, but they are too impatient to try to change what they dislike through traditional, political means.
In times of economic prosperity, sovereigns typically rely on absurd and convoluted schemes to evade state and federal income taxes and hide their assets from the IRS. In times of financial hardship, they turn to debt- and mortgage-elimination scams, techniques to avoid child support payments, and even attempts to use their redemption techniques to get out of serious criminal charges.
Once in the movement, it's an immersive and heady experience. In the past three decades, the redemptionist subculture has grown from small groups of like-minded individuals in localized pockets around the nation to a richly layered society. Redemptionists attend specialized seminars and national conferences, enjoy a large assortment of alternative newspapers and radio networks, and subscribe to sovereign-oriented magazines and websites. They home-school their children so that a new generation will not have to go through the same learning curve that they did to see past the government's curtain to the common-law utopia beyond.

(49,212 posts)The core ideas of the sovereign citizens movement originated in the racist and anti-Semitic Posse Comitatus group, which roiled the Midwest in the 1970s and 1980s and believed that the county sheriff is the highest legitimate law enforcement authority. Posse ideologues argued, in effect, that God gave America to the white man and therefore the government cannot abridge most rights of whites unless they submit to a contract with that government. But black people were only made citizens by the 14th Amendment, they argued, meaning that they have permanently contracted with the government and therefore must obey all its dictates.
The movement of sovereign citizens most of whom are clearly unaware of the ideologys racist roots has grown extremely rapidly in the last two or three years. And, while black Americans remain a relatively small fraction of the estimated 300,000 sovereign citizens nationwide, it seems clear that their numbers are growing. In the last year, more and more black sovereigns, including several arrested in Georgia and elsewhere for using bogus documents to try to steal houses, have been implementing the movements basic ideas and techniques, which have spread into a number of radical black nationalist groups.
That convergence may not be entirely surprising, given that the MSTAs Noble Drew Ali taught that black Moors were Americas original inhabitants and are therefore entitled to self-governing, nation-within-a-nation status. (Many American black nationalist groups refer mistakenly to the people of northern Africa as black; in fact, the Moors were a mix of Arabs, Berbers and black people.) Today, black nationalists who see themselves as Moors and white sovereign citizens both believe they have key rights that pre-date by eons the present government.

(35,393 posts)Then again, like many stereotypes there's some basis in facts, current or historical, as long as you don't look too carefully at details. It's just that when it's "not us" we're talking about, we usually over-generalize, and if it's a "not us" we've been told to dislike we proceed to attribute the worst properties possible.
They're not people, not individuals and not people. They're just cookie-cutter members of "that group".

(50,603 posts)Your Moor bases his beliefs on two underlying principles: the Moroccan Treaty of Peace, which was ratified September 16, 1836, for a period of fifty years, is still in effect; and the Moroccan Treaty of Peace says no Moor is subject to any law of the US government or any state government. Moors also like Redemption Theory (https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/intelligence-report/2002/new-multi-million-dollar-scam-takes-antigovernment-circles) a LOT; said theory says the government has sold your birth certificate on the stock market, but by filing a bunch of government forms in a specific order you can take it back and use the money therein to pay all your bills. They also believe 18 USC 31 - the definition of a vehicle as seen in the statute against truck hijacking - means you don't need a driver's license if you're not making money from driving cars. In short, they're standard sovereign citizens with a small twist: they don't identify with the racist origins of their bowel movement.

(35,393 posts)No evidence that BLM is violent.
One could claim that like many talk-show folk that the rhetoric of "us versus them" and "they're bad, we're good" ultimately goes to promote group divisions and foster animosity, but that's a different and completely "plausibly deniable" sort of circumstance.
Looks like the shooter had a radio and internet show under an alias, does not seem like the sovereign citizen claim is likely to hold up.

I always see people complain that when a white person does a mass shooting it's because of mental illness. I think it's safe to say that this is the case here. I see someone with grandiosity who went over the edge. Sorry for officers who got pulled into his vortex; sorry for BLM, which is getting blamed for this; and sorry for all who are fighting for fair treatment by police. This did not help.

Published
18/07/2016
A masked former US Marine murdered three Louisiana police officers in an apparent petrol station ambush, less than two weeks after a black man was shot dead in a confrontation that sparked nightly protests that reverberated throughout America.
Just days earlier, one of the murdered officers posted an emotional Facebook message about the challenges of police work in the current environment.
US president Barack Obama urged people to tamp down inflammatory words and actions. "We don't need careless accusations thrown around to score political points or to advance an agenda. We need to temper our words and open our hearts ... all of us," he said.
The gunman was identified as Gavin Long of Kansas City, who was 29 on Sunday. Long, who was black, served in the marines from 2005 to 2010, reaching the rank of sergeant. He deployed to Iraq from June 2008 to January 2009, according to military records.
