Crane collapses on lanes of Tappan Zee Bridge in NYC suburbs
Source: AP
NEW YORK (AP) A crane has collapsed across lanes of traffic at the Tappan Zee (TAP'-uhn zee) Bridge in the New York City suburbs.
Video from a news helicopter showed at least one person being taken out of a car and loaded into an ambulance after the crane collapsed around noon Tuesday.
Online images show a piece of a crane sprawled across lanes in both directions on the bridge, which spans Rockland and Westchester counties.
Rockland County Executive Ed Day says a helicopter and marine unit are on the scene.

(2,208 posts)It crosses the Hudson River about 10 miles north of the George Washington Bridge in NYC.
I have driven over it innumerable times. It's getting old and is actually past it's expected usable life span, hence the construction work I imagine.

(2,208 posts)Just to the north of the 350 foot high Palisade cliffs, where the 1 mile wide Hudson opens up even more into a 3-4 mile wide expanse -- hence the name Tappan Zee, from the Dutch for Tappan Sea.
Even as developed as the metropolitan area is, it's still incredibly scenic there.
The area was a favorite of the Hudson River School of early American painters, naturally. lol

(26,060 posts)From the story it looks like the crane was on the new one but fell across the old one (that's still being used). I remember on a clear day or night, you could see the towers (and they were around 25 miles away).

(82,383 posts)that new bridge is long overdue. The TZ bridge is one of the most dangerous failures of infrastructure in the US.

(12,002 posts)I know it's past due for replacement. But my worry was always that the bridge itself would fail, not that a piece of construction equipment from building the replacement bridge would fall on it.

(12,471 posts)Luckily it didn't happen then. I often use it when I go to NYC from the Hudson Valley. I hope that the old bridge will stay open once they clean up the mess.

(3,595 posts)Nearest alternatives are the George Washington Bridge and the bridge over Rt. 84. about 25 miles north.
=== major clusterfuk if it can't be reopened for even a week or so.

(5,455 posts)To the north you have the Bear Mountain Bridge (maybe 45 minutes under ideal circumstances) and the Newburgh Bridge (maybe 60 minutes under ideal circumstances). To the south, the George Washington Bridge, the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels and the I-278 bridge. So glad I don't live down there anymore or have to go anywhere near that part of NY & NJ.
