Judge refuses to free Oregon standoff leaders before trial
Source: Reuters
A federal judge on Tuesday rejected a petition by two brothers who led the armed occupation of a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon to be freed ahead of their trial, citing in part what he said was an aborted jailbreak attempt by one of them.
Ammon and Ryan Bundy, who spent a month in January holed up at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon to protest federal land control in the West, sought their release from custody during a hearing in U.S. District Court in Portland on Monday ahead of their September trial.
In rejecting that request in a three-page ruling, U.S. District Judge Robert Jones said he could not overlook their participation in the standoff with a large arsenal of weapons and their belief that "placing an armed force between officials seeking to enforce lawful orders and themselves is justified by their interpretation of the Constitution."
Both men are charged with conspiracy to use force, intimidation or threats to impede federal officers from discharging their duties.

(7,595 posts)I think these idiots would flee if they got the chance and I think the judge is very aware of that possibility.

(65,556 posts)Bundy ranch standoff was that he never went anywhere without armed bodyguards afterward. They had to trick him into flying to Oregon to see his sons after they were arrested. That way they were able to nab him as he got off the plane, unarmed for the first time, since he couldn't take his guns onto the plane.
The judge knows perfectly well that if any of the Bundys are ever allowed out of jail, they will immediately hole up somewhere with an inexhaustible supply of guns and ammunition, as well as an army of idiot militia types of the same sort that joined them at the ranch and at Malheur.

On one thing they have been very clear and consist ant, they do not recognize legal authority and refuse to abide by the law
Same goes for sentencing if they are found guilty They will not obey provisions for parole such as mandatory reporting or supervision and they will not give up guns or the use of armed confrontation to get their way

Do not mistake me, I am opposed to the death penalty.
And if he was not arrested, or shot, because no LEO were there at the time then I am loving the 100 years behind bars.
