A priest has been killed in an attack by two armed men on his church in a suburb of Rouen in northern France.
The attackers entered the church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray during Mass, taking the priest, Fr Jacques Hamel, 84, and four other people hostage.
Police later surrounded the church and French TV said shots were fired. Both hostage-takers are now dead.
The Amaq news agency, linked to so-called Islamic State, said "two IS soldiers" had carried out the attack. President Francois Hollande said the men had claimed to be from IS.

France 3 television said a number of shots had been heard. Police and the emergency services are at the scene.

Also apparently the priest didn't merely have his throat slit, but was beheaded.
Guess who?

(1,439 posts)Unlike most other EU member statesand some countries outside the EUthe UK is not part of the Schengen passport-free area because it hasnt signed the Schengen agreement. This means it can retain border controls.
The UK can, and does, perform passport and identity checks at its borders and refuses entry to travellers who do not travel with valid identity documents even if they are from another EU member state.
The benefit of holding an EU passport, or being the citizen of a European Economic Area (EEA) country (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein) or Switzerland, is that you travel through a separate channel at UK border controls. This normally results in a swifter identity check.

(13,081 posts)How would strict border control have stopped this?
(To be fair, we have no info about the second attacker yet. But based on what we currently know, borders have nothing to do with it)

Learned this from a Phoenix song, Lisztomania. Likely the only recorded song ever with the word "jugulate" in the lyrics.

It would be a strange target for a terror attack unless this priest is high ranking in France?

I don't understand how one loses their humanity to get to this point - not acting out in anger or a fit of rage, but to commit such an abomination with predetermination - coldly and deliberately. This kind of behavior has an odor from the pit of hell...

(13,081 posts)ISIS very specifically wants to start a holy war between Christianity and Islam, killing all non-Muslims in a literal apocalypse, in order to fulfill Koranic prophesies of the coming of their Messiah.
They could have killed any 84 year old. They chose a priest, during mass, because they want Armageddon and they have a 1500 year old book with instructions on how to get it.

(33,475 posts)as they are losing territory in the Caliphate, ISIL is trying to provoke France.
they want to provoke Europe into oppressing its immigrant population. well, more directly oppressing - RW vigilantism, expulsions, etc.

(33,475 posts)I'm saying these attacks are provocations TO escalate.
however, France, the state, cannot control all its people, and they have a Nationalist party. they're the ones to worry about.

(8,747 posts)That is a Secular state and will remain so.They should not give up their national identity to placate a bunch of religious fanatics. Islamists are going to keep stirring the pot in Europe and the resulting backlash will probably result in mass deportations back to their home countries.
