Obama threatens to veto defense appropriations bill

Source: The Hill

The House’s defense appropriations bill on Thursday joined the list of spending bills that the White House has threatened to veto over the caps in the Budget Control Act (BCA).

The Obama administration said Thursday that it would recommend a veto of the current version of the measure because it violated the spending caps set in the BCA.

The House’s defense bill that passed the committee last month had a base budget of $519 billion, which was about $3 billion above the Obama administration’s budget request. The House made spending cuts elsewhere in the non-defense discretionary budget to allow for the increased defense spending, which Republicans say is necessary to lessen the risk from $487 billion in cuts over the next decade to the defense budget due to the BCA caps.

“By adding unrequested funding for defense, the House of Representatives departs from the bipartisan understanding reached a year ago,” the Office of Management and Budget wrote in a statement of administration policy.

I suspect a number of "democrats" in congress who typically have their slobbery lips attached to the big
arse of the MIC-- just because they provide a few "jobs" in their districts, are responsible for the
bloated 2013 defense budget.

Obama needs to deal strongly with these buffoons.

that could cut Defense Spending.

The ONLY other one that could even have tried prior to him was Truman.

Measured in what economists call "constant dollars," adjusted for inflation, defense spending declined by nearly 15 percent between Reagan's last budget (for fiscal year 1989) and George H. W. Bush's last budget four years later. The decline was just under 13 percent between Bush's last budget and Clinton's final fiscal year (2001). In other words, the buying power of the dollars spent for defense declined more during Bush 41's four years than during Clinton's eight.

Bush 41’s secretary of defense explained that “overall, since I've been secretary, we will have taken the five-year defense program down by well over $300 billion. That's the peace dividend.… And now we're adding to that another $50 billion … of so-called peace dividend.” That defense secretary, of course, was Dick Cheney.

Republicans have always been fond of saying Clinton gutted the military. It's just another plain lie.

he was accused by the Right Wing of being a draft dodger.

Obama killed bin Laden so his credentials are better in this era where facts don't matter and history in Washington is what Republicans claim it to be. As far as they're concerned, Reagan brought down the Soviet Union with massive increases in defense spending and the Soviets couldn't keep up. That's a FACT in their world. Tell them different and you are a hippie. Any effort to cut defense spending is "gutting the military" and is a slap in the face of all who fight and die for the red white and blue. (cue national anthem and put yer hand on yer heart, ya heathen!)

Mihail Gorbacov tried to save it by his reforms including ending the war in Afghanistan and his "new openness" but single party rule ended and thus, it was over. It shows what happens when a political party creates a fictional world that isn't taken seriously outside of the Capital and ignores or dismisses the needs of the people.
