Update: After Vox reported this story, Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-N.J.) released a statement saying he would close this loophole. Read the story here. The fix, however, will be contained in separate legislation and not offered as part of the American Health Care Act. The version of the bill the House will vote on Thursday still contains the exemption for legislators described below.
House Republicans appear to have included a provision that exempts members of Congress and their staff from their latest health care plan.
The new Republican amendment, introduced Tuesday night, would allow states to waive out of Obamacares ban on preexisting conditions. This means that insurers could once again, under certain circumstances, charge sick people higher premiums than healthy people.
Republican legislators liked this policy well enough to offer it in a new amendment. They do not, however, seem to like it enough to have it apply to themselves and their staff. A spokesperson for Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-NJ), who authored this amendment, confirmed this was the case: Members of Congress and their staff would get the guarantee of keeping these Obamacare regulations. Health law expert Tim Jost flagged this particular issue to me.
A bit of background is helpful here. Obamacare requires all members of Congress and their staff to purchase coverage through the health laws marketplace, just like Obamacare enrollees. The politics of that plank were simple enough, meant to demonstrate that if the coverage in this law were good enough for Americans, it should be good enough for their representatives in Washington. .............

(15,696 posts)How would they justify having the same care as those of us in CA, when they're screwing the people who elected them? I'd like to see them try.

(7,645 posts)All 'cause Trumpy wants a win somewhere, anywhere for a two day headline. Those voting for it (if they actually have the numbers) will regret their shortsighted decision for years to come and we have to make sure they do.
It's political suicide and some just don't seem to care.

(26,361 posts)its their own stupid fault for making that promise and using it as a drum to rally their voting base around.

I can't believe people keep voting for these corrupt murderers because that's what they are if they pass this vile piece of shit legislation.

(49,075 posts)They also snuck in the provision to cut the provision to support lifetime costs due to catastrophic illness or injury.
They also sucked $1,000,000,000,000 (one Trillion dollars) out of the ACA and gave it to the top 2% as a tax cut.

I bet it wouldn't have passed the House without that amendment. They care more about the healthcare they will get included in their pensions than their jobs in 2018.

But the screeching Republican propaganda machine will prevent any of this information leaking out to their base.
