Mnuchin says he'll draft new sanctions after North Korea test

Source: Axios

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on "Fox News Sunday" that he plans to draft a new sanctions package for President Trump's "strong consideration" after North Korea's nuclear weapons test on Saturday night.

He said the package will be such that if a company in China or elsewhere wants to do business with North Korea, it won't be able to do business with the U.S.

"I did speak with the president, and it's clear that this behavior is completely unacceptable."

"There's a lot we can do to cut them off economically, much more than we've done already."

Mnuchin says Harvey funds must be tied to debt ceiling rise

Dave Lawler 21 mins ago

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told "Fox News Sunday" that Congress must tie Harvey recovery funding to a clean debt ceiling rise, or else the money intended for Harvey might not arrive.

"Prior to Harvey I've said, you know, we have enough funding to go through the end of September... with Harvey its moved the situation up earlier," he said. On whether Trump's threat to shut down the government over the border wall is out the window:

"I can't really comment on if it's out the window or not out the window," but priority now is Harvey.

On whether tax reform will blow a hole in the national debt: "We want to make sure we can pay for things, but the way we're going to pay for things is with economic growth." He said he thinks growth will likely be higher than the models predict.

That is the same dangerous talking point George W. Bush used back in 2000 and how did that turn out. Back then we were running a budget surplus, not $600 billion deficits. And this is only half of what Obama inherited from Bush. Here Mnuchin admits that they will not pay for the tax cuts which is an admission that the deficits will explode because of the sheer size of the proposed tax cuts. Always beware when someone fails to offer an analysis of why the models are wrong. Hint, it is because they can't.

Mnuchin fears Republicans will shut down the government over an increase in the debt ceiling. That is the only reason he would tie the debt ceiling to the popular Harvey aid package. Maybe they will even try to do it by voice vote. It all boils down to Republicans can't govern. They are still in obstruct mode even when they control all of the branches of government - at least when it comes to the debt ceiling. This country didn't even have a debt ceiling until isolationist Republicans insisted on one for funding World War I as they didn't want to prevent President Wilson from widening that war. The law should have been sunset by the end of that war. Republican thinking hasn't changed in the last 100 years. Republicans are an impediment to good government.

6. On the face of it, these proposals make reasoned sense (very un-Trump like).

A clean debt ceiling increase tied to Harvey relief funding will get Democrats on board when a portion of rightwing conservatives revolt.

Short of a preemptive strike against North Korea, economic screws remain the best tool in the diplomatic toolbox.

'Trump tweets' are not diplomacy. They're just impulsive blathering from an incompetent, unintelligent, easily manipulated, attention-craving sociopath.

We need to get Kim Jong-un a twitter account and they can spend their time 'flaming' each other. You'd expect more from a grown man, but obviously Trump gets under Kim's skin. One of them has to be the grownup - KIM!
