Rage mounts against pharma corp. that jacked cost of life-saving EpiPen by 400%
The damning allegations came to light today when the FDA posted a warning letter it sent September 5 to the manufacturer, Meridian Medical Technologies, Inc. The company (which is owned by Pfizer) produces EpiPens for Mylan, which owns the devices and is notorious for dramatically raising prices by more than 400 percent in recent years.
The auto-injectors are designed to be used during life-threatening allergic reactions to provide a quick shot of epinephrine. If they fail to fire, people experiencing a reaction can die or suffer serious illnesses. According to the FDA, thats exactly what happened for hundreds of customers.
In the letter, the agency wrote:
In fact, your own data show that you received hundreds of complaints that your EpiPen products failed to operate during life-threatening emergencies, including some situations in which patients subsequently died.

(91 posts)This type of behavior will continue as a normal "risk of doing business" .. until we start handing down hard jail time for the folks that make these kinds of decisions. I'm not sure why it doesn't count as first-degree murder.

(1,244 posts)Unless I am willing to let them rape me for every financial asset I have, I am not welcome to have any of these drugs. My wife had an eye exam recently - the doctor says you have dry eye and called in a prescription for her. $500.00 a month for dry eye drops. This is not health care, I have some more choice words for what this is. You need $0.75 worth of something and they are selling it for $500.00 and its ok to do this its American Capitalism. They could care less if you die.
I had a neighbor who "needed" a $3,000 per month biologic. You would not believe the beg, plead, endless calls, consider go-fund-me to get the money she had to go through to get it - got a short term 3 month no charge but then its $3,000 per month after that.

I found a web site which gives you price reduction coupons.
Paid 37.00 at one pharmacy and 20.00 at another for 90 day supply, for the past year.

(18,015 posts)...increasing stockholder value is your primary directive, period, end of story. I've seen this same thing during my own career. The cost of doing the right thing is always FAR smaller than the cost of getting jacked up by the FDA....and make no mistake, the FDA's enforcement operation will come down on them like an avalanche. But do these assholes ever learn? Of course not. They just get fired, move on somewhere else and start the same shit again.
The FDA and Justice need to start indicting, prosecuting and imprisoning those responsible instead of just threatening individual prosecuting, but not following through. Putting a massive financial crimp on a corporation only goes so far.

Open the tube, take out the syringe, remove the needle cover and give the person the shot.
