Steve Bannon: Trump's leaked "Access Hollywood" tape was a "litmus test"

Source: CBS News

In his first extensive interview since leaving the Trump administration, former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon tells "60 Minutes" about the fallout after the leaked "Access Hollywood" tape.

Bannon: Absolutely. The Billy Bush Saturday to me is a litmus test. It's a litmus test. And I said it the other day to (White House Chief of Staff) General (John) Kelly during the Charlottesville thing, afterwards. It's a line I remember from the movie. "The Wild Bunch." William Holden uses it right before that huge gunfight at the end. "When you side with a man, you side with him," okay? The good and the bad. You can criticize him behind, but when you side with him, you have to side with him. And that's what Billy Bush weekend showed me. Billy Bush Saturday showed me who really had Donald Trump's back to play to his better angels. All you had to do, and what he did, was go out and continue to talk to the American people. … People didn't care. They knew Donald Trump was just doing locker room talk with a guy. And they dismissed it. It had no lasting impact on the campaign. Yet, if you see the mainstream media that day, it was, literally, he was falling into Dante's Inferno.

Rose: Boy, you took names on Billy Bush Sunday, didn't you?

Bannon: I did. O – I gotta – I gotta – you know, I'm Irish. I gotta get my black book and I got 'em. … Christie, because of Billy Bush weekend – and – was – was – not looked at for a Cabinet position.

Bannon calls it "Billy Bush Weekend." As if it was about Billy Bush.

Bannon studied Goebbels well.

Anyone that liked trump before the access Hollywood tape still liked him afterwards. If you weren't turned off by everything else trump has ever done, then a little pussy grabbing wasn't going to be the deal breaker. Anyone that did care about it most likely didn't like him before the tape, and the tape just confirmed what we all know.
Personally, I've spent longer thinking about drinking spoiled milk longer than I considered voting for trump.

and I've been an athlete all my life. Honorable men do not talk that way in the freaking locker rooms, unless it's freakishly different in the locker rooms at republican country clubs.

Republican attempts to minimize the putrid morals of their casino hustler, serial liar, TreasonWeasel, and ignoble Draft-Dodger-in-Chief, are pathetic. Such attempts reveal the utter degenerative corruption of republican "family values."

Decent men don't talk like that in any setting anywhere. We all have mothers, grandmothers, wives, girlfriends, daughters, granddaughters, nieces, etc., that we love and care about. You would likely get your face rearranged if you talk about stuff like that.

Trump is a weak man's idea of a strong man. His idea of "locker room talk" is the idea of someone who's never been in a locker room.

The test was for Trump supporters: did enough of them hate [racial epithet]s and [derogatory term for women]s enough to elect a completely unqualified and loathsome person?

History tells us the answer.

It just about makes grammatical sense, but not when you know what "to have someone's back" and "play to his better angels" mean. I can't see where "better angels" come into this at all - even from Bannon's point of view.

Seems like something about keeping him from giving up or something but "better angels" makes no sense. Or it does to Bannon and it's something really creepy.

I wondered if that was his level, topped off with a bunch of heavy books to provide rhetoric for his beliefs (I really did know someone like that, who, reasurringly, couldn't get tenured as a professor). It's hard to see Bannon as anything but a snake, but he might see it as a virtue for others. And, who knows? Maybe he's looking for a great leader to follow.

my comments with Derrida in your mind. I can hardly figure out what I was trying to say myself.

But, yes. He's definitely drawn to disorder and has a major nasty streak with ambitions to play it out on planetary scale. I can only wonder about his attempts to develop an intellectual foundation for his actions. I've never read ultraright, fascist-leaning thinkers and can't guess at how well he's doing, but somehow I really doubt it's profound intellectual abilities that have brought him this far.

Did the Clinton campaign, or the top couple people in the campaign, know of this in advance? Was someone sitting on the tape, so they could leak it at the most damaging time?

We kept hearing about all of Trump's on-camera, but "private" comments during his Apprentice show, and how Tom Arnold was teasing their release.

Just like the Comey "re-opening" of the Clinton emails case. I wonder how much thought goes into timing of release for these types of leaks.

Why isn't anybody talking about that? OK I hate him as much as you guys do.

But he knew what a disaster the Trump campaign was because he saw it from the inside. He probably also saw and heard stuff about the Russians too. Christie was a former DA, and he could see that he was up to his eyeballs in deep shit (with Trump.)
Billy Bush's tape gave him the cover to get out while the getting's good. It probably saved his fat rear end.
