U.S. warplanes call off surveillance of an ISIS convoy, at Russia's request
Source: Washington Post
BEIRUT At Russias request, the U.S. military on Friday called off its surveillance of a convoy of Islamic State fighters that has been stuck in the Syrian desert for the past 10 days, saying it is now up to the Syrian government to resolve its fate.
The decision to withdraw the warplanes that have been circling over the convoy came after Syrian troops advancing through the province of Deir al-Zour passed the point where the convoy is located, leaving it behind Syrian army lines, according to a military statement.
The convoy became stuck in the no mans land between the front lines of the Syrian Army and the Islamic State, after the U.S. military bombed the road ahead to prevent it from reaching Islamic State territory in eastern Syria. It had been traveling there from western Syria under the terms of a deal struck between the Islamic State and the Lebanese Hezbollah movement to end fighting along the Lebanese border.
Because Syrian troops are now in control of the area, the U.S.-led coalition against the Islamic State agreed to a Russian request to halt the surveillance, in the interests of deconflicting the rival Russian- and U.S.-backed efforts to defeat the militants, the statement said.

I swear, this kind of stuff almost makes those silly, clueless militia buffoons look good in comparison. Almost. But I mean, caving and declaring defeat from the comfort of one's easy chair for no particular reason?

Merriam-Webster definition of vassal:
vassal: a person in the past who received protection and land from a lord in return for loyalty and service.
If Trump was put into office by the Putin's interference in our election of 2016, Trump is likely a vassal to Putin and can be used by him to carry out Putin's foreign policy and military objectives.
I don't see any evidence yet that Putin is directly running our military. However the military does report to Trump as the civilian Commander-in-Chief.

(19,205 posts)that this was happening with a Democratic President, and a Democratically controlled Congress. The White House would be surrounded by armed Republicans, which means racists, fascists, misogynists etc. armed to the teeth and ready for an armed coup d'etat.
Rush Limbaugh would have returned to his studio, in the middle of a Cat 4 Hurricane, to alert all of his deranged listeners about the Democrats' treasonous activities.
All hell would be breaking out. Now, what do we hear out of Republicans at the moment? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone?

(1,204 posts)understand why they would request surveillance stop.
Either they plan on helping ISIS (seems unlikely) or perhaps they are just going to let loose on the sitting ducks.

(16,118 posts)Honestly if the Syrians were planning on letting loose, why would it matter if the US was watching?
This wouldn't be the first time an Arab government in the Middle East helped out Jihadists...

(1,204 posts)that Syria, Russia, or even Trump benefits from having ISIS escape. I suppose some short-sighted "strategy" to move the problem elsewhere could be in play, but that seems like something everyone should know will come back to bite them in the ass eventually.
As for the letting loose on ISIS, I was thinking they may be worried about the optics of Syrian soldiers killing fleeing ISIL members in mass. I may be wrong, but wasn't it mentioned that in those fleeing convoys there were family members of ISIL members? At least that's something I would be concerned about if I were them. Then again, they might be past the point of even caring about international opinion.
I dunno.

(1,333 posts)That the Russians and Syrians believe the US supports ISIS. The last major experience of US bombing in the area resulted in the US killing 80+ Syrian soldiers fighting ISIS and allowing ISIS to advance on the area. Now that the Syrians have done the heavy work of breaking ISIS siege, we now have this announcement of the Syrian "so called" Democratic forces planning their advance on Deir Ezzor.
I bet the Syrians see the American's help not helping at all. The US "bombed" ISIS for almost 2 year while their territory expanded and this only reversed only when the Russians came into the picture. Sadly for all of us, they see the U.S for what it truly is, an imperialist trouble making country trying cause chaos, steal their land and implement regime change with their new Kurdish merc army.
Btw, a few months a go, the US backed kurds gave a large group of ISIS fighters amnesty and allowed them to escape Raqqa. The US is there illegally so this is a non issue anyway. The sooner the US, their weapons and their many proxy group are defeated and kicked out of Syria, the sooner that country would see peace again.
Viva Syria and their brave soldiers fighting all sorts of enemy foreign backed forces.
Not saying I believe it all, but this is the sort of things the Russians and Syrians believe about the US. This is why they want the US out. I post this because this place is sort of an echo chamber where the prevailing story line is that the US military is all good 100% of the time and whoever they are killing are bad guys and terrorists 100% of the time.
