GOP sees fresh opening with Dems' single payer embrace

Source: The Hill

BY JESSIE HELLMANN - 09/16/17 01:14 PM EDT

Republicans are cheering on the Democrats' embrace of single-payer health care, believing the move to the left will be an albatross for candidates in next year's elections.

After playing defense on health care for months as they failed to fill a promise to repeal ObamaCare, Bernie Sanders’s increasingly popular ‘Medicare for all’ gives the GOP new momentum to blast Democrats. And they’ve got plenty of targets, with 16 Democratic senators backing Sanders’ effort and a similar House measure supported by half of the party’s caucus.

"We’re absolutely ecstatic that the Democratic party is embracing single payer, and I think there’s a stark contrast developing at a time when the Republican party is focusing on cutting taxes, the Democratic party is focused on adding trillions of dollars of spending and advocating for socialized medicine,” said Corry Bliss, executive director of the Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF), the House GOP-approved super PAC.

The CLF, which plans on spending $100 million during the 2018 election cycle to protect Republican seats in the House, plans to spend a portion of that on ads tying Democrats to single payer. That’s twice as much as they spent in 2016. “We have $50 million dedicated to attacking Nancy Pelosi. We’re just working through what portion of that can we use to explaining how harmful single payer will be to the American people,” Bliss said.

and more easily defended on cost issues while still aimed at the goal of universal coverage.

per AMJoy. The phrase "medicare for all" also tests out at 60% approval.

And what's not to like?

Full, lifetime medical care, dental care, vision care, etc. No more being bankrupted by a serious illness or worrying about who will take of loved ones if you can't.

No more employer based insurance, meaning you don't have to stay in a job you hate just because it has health insurance benefits. Think how much more productive and creative our economy could be.

It frees up employers to not have to offer a health benefit, meaning more $s available for raises and salaries.

No more having care dictated by private insurers.

If it means a tax increase, so be it. My cost share of very basic health insurance costs $1860/yr. I'd gladly pay that much more in taxes for single payer. I'll bet plenty of others would, too.

on this one.

When they throw out that 32T over 10 years cost, all we need do is say that's the same as overall healthcare costs now. Under single payer, we'll get more bang for the same money.

7. 32T over 10 years, you say?

The current mishmash healthcare system in the US costs, according to Forbes magazine estimate is 3.8T per year. That's 38T over 10 years and that was in 2014!

Link: https://www.forbes.com/forbes/welcome/?toURL=https://www.forbes.com/sites/danmunro/2014/02/02/annual-u-s-healthcare-spending-hits-3-8-trillion/&refURL=https://search.yahoo.com/&referrer=https://search.yahoo.com/

In 2015, Forbes estimated the US spent 10,000/person/year. There were approx 320M Americans in 2015, making 2015 healthcare was 3.2T, exactly the same amount as Sanders' bill! And that was 2 years ago.

What Sen Sanders is really proposing is reallocating what we already spend on healthcare more efficiently and covering more people over the course of 4 years. Everyone who believes in good and efficient gov't will like it.

The gop is light years ahead of the DNC when it comes to manipulating the weak minded American public. Give them ANY opening, and they will make you pay. I still think back to what they did to a decorated Vietnam veteran; and we ended up with an AWOL, silver spoon sticking out of his ass coward for President.

These bastards are ruthless, but smart!

that those "tax cuts" are not going to really affect them. Whereas having single payer/Medicare for all would. And didn't he promise them some sort of thing during the campaign?

It seems to be like the republicans coming out against a better health care system would be THEIR albatross in the mid-terms. But, they do rely on and take advantage of an ill informed populace.

They'll mock the federal government and ask if you can trust it to run your health care. And then bring up huge taxes.

Democrats need to come out strong on the counterattack-- Medicare works! Taxes will be less than premiums and co-pays! Will cover everything Medicare does, etc.

More than not, people realize what a scam that party is, especially when it comes to coverage. I don't think it will be a great issue for them whether talking about the awful single payer or Obamacare - especially to the people they threatened recently. You'll never convince the hate radio and fux tv viewers otherwise - no matter what you say. Those knuckledraggers always have to be pushed or pulled into a better society. Ignore those assholes and get out the vote is the only way to go. Most people can see what slime balls the republicans are. Voter apathy is the only enemy at this point.
