Grassley asks FBI if Trump was warned of Russian efforts to infiltrate his campaign

Source: USAToday

WASHINGTON Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley released a letter late Thursday to FBI Director Christopher Wray asking if agents ever warned Donald Trump about possible attempts by the Russian government to infiltrate his campaign last year.

Grassley, whose committee is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, said federal agents warned Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., about Russian ties by his former campaign manager when McCain was running for president in 2008. But McCain's office issued a press release shortly before midnight disputing Grassley's assertion.

"If the FBI did provide a defensive briefing or similar warning to the (Trump) campaign, then that would raise important questions about how the Trump campaign responded, Grassley, R-Iowa, wrote in a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray. "On the other hand, if the FBI did not alert the campaign, then that would raise serious questions about what factors contributed to its decision and why it appears to have been handled differently in a very similar circumstance involving a previous campaign," Grassley wrote, referring to McCain's campaign.

McCain clearly took offense at being thrust into Grassley's letter to Wray. Grassley asked Wray to respond to the letter by Oct. 4. "Neither Senator McCain nor anyone on his staff recalls receiving such warnings from the intelligence community," said McCain's spokeswoman, Julie Tarallo. "Facts are stubborn things, and the fact is no member of Congress has done more to push back on Russian aggression, human rights abuses, and corruption than Senator John McCain. Any suggestion to the contrary is clearly intended to distract from the serious ongoing investigations into Russias interference in our election system."

It' s smokescreen time. Is Grassley that stupid or is he maneuvering for trump/russia? First of all, the FBI shouldn't tell trump he's under investigation until they're ready to make charges. Grassley needs to resign and let someone with a few ethics and some common sense take over - maybe a Democrat because there doesn't seem to be any republicans that are up to the job.

... he'll do what he is told by the GOP High Command, and right now that is to deflect, detract, obfuscate and dodge... Do anything possible to take the heat off of the GOP. I suspect some of those "mysterious" secret-donor super PAC funds Mitch McConnell seems to be able to pull out of his ass to help his Republipals, may have come from nefarious sources, read: Russia. NO ONE in the GOP wants anyone looking closely at their funding, financing or whom they're having late night dinners with.

JUST THEIR FUCKING NATURE at this point ...

Their first instinct EVERY TIME when they do something stupid are these mental gymnastics to prove in their insane minds that there is some kind of bias against them.

5. It wouldn't have mattered even if the FBI warned Trump.

Trump would have been totally incapable of listening to the warning and acting in an appropriate manner. This is proven by his ignoring President Obama's warning about Flynn.

19. Just like his voters are incapable of voting appropriately.

They were warned since before the primaries - then the primaries put in their faces and they still voted for him. How insane can voters get? I guess that will always be an open ended question since the answer keeps changing.

This is subliminal pushback. What he's saying to dumb voters is "if they didn't tell him, he has no guilt in the matter".

Fucking preposterous.

10. Perhaps the FBI had evidence that Trump "knew" about Russian interference from the get-go

And perhaps Grassley pushing this button will backfire in his face. Like it has for Nunes and his ridiculous personal probe into the matter.

and it wouldn't suprise me that somehow Guilliani found out about the FISA warrants on Manafort and alerted Trump about this.

There is definately a reason Manafort left the campaign so quickly.

This is mind boggling. Grassley's effort, it appears, is both to damage McCain's reputation and shield Donald Trump.
