Priti Patel forced to resign over unofficial meetings with Israelis

Source: The Guardian

Priti Patel has been forced to resign after failing to be candid with Theresa May over unofficial meetings with Israeli ministers, businesspeople and a senior lobbyist.

The international development secretary is the second cabinet minister to leave the government in a week and her loss will reinforce the impression that Theresa May’s government is in freefall.

Downing Street called Patel back from a trip to Uganda and Ethiopia on Wednesday after six days of revelations including an undisclosed meeting with the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, organised by Lord Polak, an experienced Tory lobbyist.

The development will be seen as a blow for Brexiters, for whom Patel is a standard bearer. She was also the only minority ethnic woman in the cabinet.

She is an extreme economic-right fundamentalist, and an ardent Brexiter. She is in favour of capital punishment; and has a dodgy record in all sorts of ways, such as being a former lobbyist for the tobacco industry.

What made her think that it was OK for her to try to make deals with Israeli (or any country's) leaders, without checking with her bosses, and when supposedly on holiday, is beyond me.

It is very difficult indeed at the best of times to think of anything positive to say about Priti Patel. Terrible track record prior to becoming an MP, by all accounts not a good constituency MP and comes across as something of a swivel eyed ideologue.

But this goes beyond left / right issues. Patel's actions have put the credibility of official British Foreign Policy at serious risk.
