Poll: Nearly half of white Southerners feel like they're under attack
Source: The Hill
BY JACQUELINE THOMSEN - 11/12/17 04:27 PM EST
Nearly half of white Americans living in the South feel like theyre under attack, a new Winthrop Poll found.
Forty-six percent of white Southerners said they agree or strongly agree that white people are under attack in the U.S. More than three-fourths of black respondents said they believe racial minorities are under attack.
And 30 percent of all respondents in the poll agreed that America must protect and preserve its white European heritage. More than half of respondents disagreed with the statement. Forty percent of respondents also said they believed that Confederate statues should remain as is, while nearly a quarter said a plaque should be added to contextualize the statue.
Twenty-seven percent of respondents said the statues should be moved to a museum. Nearly half of black respondents said the statues should be in museums, and a quarter said they should be completely removed.

(5,754 posts)and there are racists everywhere. In the South, people are more openly racist, while in the North, they just avoid seeing folks who don't look like them. The most racist place I ever lived was Kansas City. The only African American kids in my chidren's school were Joe Carter's children.

(198 posts)for many years. There is saying in Eastern Kentucky regarding an implied disrespect of white folks. In these folks twisted minds government subsidies like snap and medicaid go mostly to folks of color, while they collect disability and receive medicaid or medicare. The saying goes something like this: Poor white and out of sight.

(14,605 posts)Decades of racist dog whistles and sowing of hatred. People have to be taught to hate. In some cases, it's the parents. In others, its our lack of a Fairness Doctrine and big-business propaganda. Make no mistake. Charlie Koch and the rest of the 'donor class' have some big expectations of tax cuts, which will pick our pockets.
They need us to hate one another, because bitter division enriches them.

Next, when we get strong enough, we need a 21st century Fairness Doctrine. Lots of deep pockets will line up against that, though. Just as many as when we overturn Citizens United.

(51,673 posts)let alone a Fairness Doctrine. It seems like it is always us against them and the rich control everything more than ever.

(14,605 posts)Eventually the pendulum will swing back that far. It will.
I'm an optimist, and see signs even now that the pendulum is moving away from the crazy right. Many, many people are putting out healing energy, as well as performing healing actions in their lives.

(51,673 posts)I lived there in 2005 for a little while when I couldn't take Bush and the "war" attitude of the US any longer without slitting my throat. This was in the days of Freedom Fries too. When I asked the French if they hated Americans they always said, "Bad leaders come and bad leaders go, things will change again". My sister was there a month ago and they have they same attitude towards The Moron (the current, bigger Moron). It is comforting to know that people like that, and you are one, still exist. THANKS!

(58,785 posts)jump out from this poll is that OVER HALF of southerners polled denied the enticement to agree with the question. Given the extreme polarity over these issues, it seems likely that southern manners are disguising a very wide schism here also.
I'm with Patrick. Our grandparents did it. However, I confess I'm worried. This time the koch-types learned from that and early on set out to divide and conquer the electorate, and they've succeeded to the point that I wonder if it sometimes makes some of them nervous. There's very little reporting on religious right extremists, but the kochsters have aligned with them and they're no doubt very busy and determined.

(2,158 posts)bullshit. I live in the South, and have friends throughout the South, in Cities and rural areas. Not one of my friends feels "under attack: I do not. Maybe you'd find one out of 200 hundred that feels that way, but you'd find teh same ration in about any part of the country.
The so called survey is a steaming load of caca, designed to divide and distract.
I'm surprised people here are dumb enough to fall for it.

(59,606 posts)For this latest Winthrop Poll, callers surveyed 830 residents in 11 Southern states by landline and cell phones between Oct. 22 and Nov. 5. The Southern states are Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. Results which use all respondents have a margin of error of approximately +/- 3.4% at the 95% confidence level. Subgroups have higher margins of error. Margins of error are based on weighted sample size.
Then there's your personal experience, which is different. The fact that it's different doesn't invalidate the poll.
azureblue
(2,158 posts)830 people. I easily know three times that, in all of the Southern states, and I know maybe four people who would fit the poll's definition. The poll is invalid or skewed. Or once again, an attempt to try to paint Southerner as bigoted or as white supremacists. Let me clue you in here - you can get the same numbers in any state of the union, if you know who to call..
there is no defending this bullshit poll. Really now, almost half of all Southerners feels threatened? That even defies common sense, much less logic..
And I will add this: 34% of Georgia's population is black. MS is 38%. LA is 33% So, using the polls numbers: let's average out the number of black folks per state at 35%. So 35% of 830 is about 290. The poll claims that 46% feel threatened, right? So the poll is saying that roughly 140 blacks feel "threatened"? That blacks are threatening their lifestyle? Get real......
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)And here they are. Ask questions inviting people to reveal their ignorance and some of the more unpleasant facets of their characters and you certainly won't be eliciting their finer ones. As we see from some of the responses here.
I live in the south also, and their good facets are what people show most of the time. Of course. But they're very real.
But I wouldn't say what the poll results suggest is completely invalid, though given what we know about the validity of polling data I'd take the figures with a grain of salt.

(22,430 posts)I'm white and I have nothing in common with their "white heritage"
The only thing all white Americans have in common is beating up on non-whites. It is a culture defined by who we aren't.
You wanna talk about Irish American heritage or Polish American heritage, maybe I can understand that, but "white American" is a completely bogus category.
We Yankees are just as white and just as European as you, and I will be damned if we support your "heritage" of treason and slavery
magicarpet
(14,222 posts)You said,
"We Yankees are just as white and just as European as you, and I will be damned if we support your "heritage" of treason and slavery."
---------------------
They refer to it as "White Heritage" because it adds to the facade that what they refer to is of their historic past. The innocent day to day events of times gone past. Our history - we are all entitled to preserve and record our history and the history of our ancestors. Only a mean person would deny you your right to your historic past.
First of all it is not "White Heritage" they wish to preserve it is "White Privilege". They want to cut in line ahead of the black and/or brown man because they think they are better than them and they always deserve a better spot in the social order than the darkies.
If they feel bad or having a cranky day it is their right to take it out on the black man. If they get together in a mob and get shitfaced drunk they have a right to entertain themselves at the expense of the black man.
Hunt a black man down, bind his hands, tie a rope from the bound hands and the other end to the back bumper of a pick up truck. Find a nice long dirt road, start off slow having him run behind the pick up. Then increase the speed little by little until the black man stumbles and falls down then proceed and continue a few more miles dragging this man's body down the dirt road. Southern boys will be boys, sometimes they drink and act out and get kind of rowdy, but they were just having a little bit of fun.
This type of stuff has no place on our society. It has nothing to do with heritage or history but more to do with histrionics and hysterical racism.
Like,
The Rebel flag = hysterical racism
The KKK = hysterical racism
White Supremacy = hysterical racism
The Nazi flag = hysterical racism
This is all part and parcel of Southern history but is nothing to brag or be proud of.
It is long past time to put this monster of rampant racism to rest. Monuments to honor those who proclaimed the virtues of slavery, grotesque racism, and treason against the United States government might be the wrong direction to go.
The goodness and intelligence of man does not often prevail by osmosis - if bull headedness and stubbornness enters the equation the corrective measures often must be forced to achieve the desired results.
Sometimes it seems we are too eager to cover up our blunders or inclined to make a hasty exit for the door to escape the reality of these blunders.
You can't help but wonder if we took the time to analyze our blunders and better understand them, maybe assign some blame for those who caused the blunders and then more fully resolve them, if we might be better off.
If we are in such a hurry to move on and look forward never looking back - our problems and blunders never seem to be resolved but rather come back to haunt us again and again.
It is unfortunate that at the end of the Civil War it was not clearly spelled out that slavery and it's step sister racism, and treason committed by the south was a despicable and vile act, this should have been understood in no uncertain terms - no ifs, and, or buts.
But we somehow allowed to let these issues slide, then come back to haunt us, then slow boil, bubble, and fester. Next, then to compound the issue we permitted the Sons and Daughters of the Confederacy access to public space to erect monuments to the "heroes" of slavery, racism, and treasonous acts that caused the loss in excess of 400,000 lives in all out civil warfare.
Do the officers and soldiers of the Confederate Army deserve to be held up as heroes with monuments, statues, schools, public buildings, and federal military bases named after them ? Should we really be celebrating slavery and treason, because that seems exactly what we are doing and have been doing for a prolonged period of time.
What can we expect next - erecting granite and bronze monuments and statues to Osama bin Ladin, Adolph Hitler, General Pinochet, and Idi Amin ?
The most despicable monsters of the world carved into marble likenesses so we can always remember and tell our children about them so our cherished heroes are never forgotten no matter how monstrous their acts.
Are we sure this is the correct and proper thing to do - monsters should not be our heroes. A mere footnote in the annals of history books is the best they deserve but to be worshiped they deserve not to be so entitled or remembered quite so endearingly.

(4,619 posts)EXCEPT: No Blacks, Browns, Asians, Jews, Hispanics, Muslims, Gays, Native Americans, etc. need apply. Whiny-ass, privileged white Americans in the South should just secede again. They can ban all of the above groups, have 24/7 Jay-zus as mandatory state religion, NRA and open carry, NASCAR and all the rest. They'd probably be fine with bringing back slavery.

(9,287 posts)This type of poll moves conversation into dead ends unless pollsters learn to force people to articulate words through the lense of logic and reason.
If this feeling is about the statue ,then just say that. Does that issue mean that whites are under attack?
How else are they under attack? Economically? Then who is attacking them? African Americans? Hispanics? Aliens? If so there is no data or discussion to support that belief.
We cant discuss our living in the same country if we surrender to feeling polls. It is so sloppy intellectually. I wish the Hill or the College that ran the poll would insert reason and logic back into the discussion. Otherwise the feelingsof under attack leaves no room for discussion and increase the laziness and dumbed down thought that allows feelings to become the malignant policy and politics of Trumpism.

I asked him how he was a racist and he answered it differently than I expected. He said it was because when the Civil War ended, Blacks should have been allowed to go to the same schools and get the same education as Whites. I told him he needed to talk with his pastor, who is Black, about what a racist is.
