Meredith to buy U.S. publisher Time in Koch-backed deal
Source: Reuters
U.S. media company Meredith Corp (MDP.N) said on Sunday it will buy Time Inc (TIME.N), the publisher of Sports Illustrated and Fortune magazines, in a $1.84 billion all-cash deal backed by conservative billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch.
It will give news, business and sports brands to the Des Moines, Iowa-based publisher and broadcaster, which owns lifestyle magazines such as Better Homes & Gardens and Family Circle. Analysts have said that bulking up on publishing assets could give Meredith the scale required to spin off its broadcasting arm into a standalone company.

Now the right wing Kochs will own Time. Our voices are being systematically silenced by this endless right wing coup.

(2,974 posts)Conservatives continue to buy-up society and entrench their draconian point of view into daily life while liberal billionaires ignore this as if it's "beside the point" and, instead, support philanthropic efforts. Helping people is all well and good. But at this point, liberal billionaires need to step up and counter this downfall by buying some public media and evening out the playing field. Soros, Gates, Bezos, Buffet, Steyer and all those guys need to change their "I'm-keeping-my-fortune-apolitical-and-will-change-society-one-person-at-a-time" attitude. (Okay, Tom Steyer not so much. But, still...)
We liberals have a problem. We're constantly "helping" people by funding food pantries, promoting education and engaging in all sorts of philanthropy - while ignoring the "promotional" and publicity side of it. We need to step up in this war of ideas and start engaging in stuff that actually works. Feeding children and providing clean water and rights to women is all great. But, sometimes when the opposition starts making gains, we have to start fighting them on their own playing field or we'll lose.
Right now, we're losing.
