UPDATED - While Honoring Native American Code Talkers, Trump Attacks 'Pocahontas'
Source: Talking Points Memo
By MATT SHUHAM Published NOVEMBER 27, 2017 3:06 PM
At an event honoring Native American code talkers who used the Navajo language as a form of coded message during World War II, President Donald Trump repeated a frequent attack against Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).
You were here long before any of us were here, Trump said, although we have a representative in Congress who they say was here a long time ago. They call her Pocahontas.
But you know what, I like you, Trump continued to the Native American veterans standing beside him.
The attack is based on Warrens former claim that, according to family stories, she had Native American heritage. She had no proof for the claim, which then-Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) used to attack Warren when she ran against him in 2012. Trump revived the attack in 2016, when Warren campaigned for Hillary Clinton.
Warren responded in an interview with MSNBCs Ali Velshi shortly afterward. This was supposed to be an event to honor heroes, people who put it all on the line for our country, and people who, because of their incredible, work saved the lives of countless Americans and our allies, she said. It is deeply unfortunate that the President of the United States cannot even make it through a ceremony honoring these heroes without having to throw out a racial slur.

UPDATE:
Elizabeth Warren slams Trump for blurting out racial slur during Native American event

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) on Monday blasted President Donald Trump for referring to her as Pocahontas during a White House event to honor Native Americans.
It is deeply unfortunate that the President of the United States cannot even make it through a ceremony honoring these heroes without throwing out a racial slur, the senator said on MSNBC.

(1,148 posts)That none of these men stood up for themselves is demoralizing. Donald trump is not a scary man, he's a child. And nobody can speak up and say "please don't use racial slurs around me"?
and we wonder why the toddler runs amok.

(92 posts)Just saw the clip of the orange shit stain insulting the Marine Code Talkers. I have been trying to come up with a response that would not get me blocked. I served in the Marines. Code Talkers are part of the Corps legend. Because of their importance, the minimum age requirement for enlistment was waived. Most of them were teenagers: some as young as 14 years old. All of them were volunteers. Each one had a white Marine as a bodyguard. No Code Talker was ever captured. After the war they were denied their GI benefits because they lived on federal land (reservations). Each and every one of them has scraped better stuff off of their boots than the shit stain will ever hope to be.

(7,288 posts)Released in Germany in 2014, Kings of Kallstadtwhich includes an interview conducted by the sensibly shod Wendel, Linzer torte in hand, with Donald Trump at his gleaming Trump Tower officeswas made before Trumps Presidential bid. Unsurprisingly, both the film and Kallstadt itself are now getting a second look in a country where, a few weeks ago, the cover of Der Spiegel featured the Republican front-runner against a backdrop of an American flag and a raging fire. Insanity, the headline read.
Donald Trumps public acknowledgement of what he refers to in the film as his German bloodGood stuff, he says, crediting it with his reliability, strength, and ability to arrive on timeis actually fairly recent. Until 1990, including in his 1987 best-seller, The Art of the Deal, Trump claimed to be Swedish, not German. This relatively transparent family fictionTrumps German grandmother lived across the street from the family until her death, in the sixtieswas first propagated by Trumps father, Fred, due to anti-German sentiment in the U.S.
But Donald Trumps dilatory enthusiasm for his German heritagein 1999, he was the grand marshal of the German-American Steuben Parade in New Yorkis something of a one-way street. Theres not anyone in Germany talking about Trump being one of ours, Sebastian Jobs, a history professor at the Free University in Berlin, said. Here people were really excited about Obama. They look down on Trump. Nonetheless, as Wendels film shows, tiny Kallstadt is teeming with Trump family members, from second- or third-degree cousins of the Presidential hopeful to relatives by marriage. Im from a village, Wendel explained recently on a popular German television talk show. Everyone is related to everyone else by marriage. There have been Trumps in Kallstadt for three hundred years, Gwenda Blair, the author of The Trumps: Three Generations of Builders and a Presidential Candidate, noted. According to her research, Hanns Drumpf, an itinerant lawyer, moved to Kallstadt in 1608, and the spelling of his last name changed by the end of that century.

(14,180 posts)Or that it is something for her to be ashamed of.
She believed that there was native American blood in her ancestral chain somewhere based on what she was told by other relatives, and mentioned it once. So....I suppose there is a technical flaw in that she didn't actually have the proof of this. But its something she grew up with believing. She may be wrong about it. I'm sure if someone proved this was not true she'd just accept it and move on. What if she said she thought there was Italilan, or Spanish, or Russian relatives in the Warren family tree but did not have definitive proof? I'm sure there are countles Americans, both Democrats and Republicans that may have some unsubstantiated rumors floating around the family unit about dear great aunt Agnes having a salacious affair with an Indian/Black/Latin lover.
Why is this such a giant faux pas anyways? That she might be purposely claiming a falsehood to get her in good with native Americans and those who sympathize with them? At any rate the Republicans using a racist slur to tease her about it seems far worse.
