BANGKOK -- Two Americans who maintained a social media account called "Traveling Butts" have been arrested in Thailand after posting a photo of themselves at a famous Buddhist temple with their rear ends exposed, police said Wednesday.
Deputy police spokesman Krisana Pattanacharoen said the men were arrested Tuesday night at a Bangkok airport and face public indecency charges.
The men caused an uproar in Buddhist-majority Thailand last week after their photo taken at Bangkok's Wat Arun was widely shared, prompting a police investigation.
The men, whom police identified only by their first names, maintained a since-deleted Instagram account where they posed for photos at tourist destinations around the world with their buttocks exposed. The account had more than 14,000 followers.

(13,080 posts)country with its own set of laws. Getting deported is a light punishment in my view. Thailand is very protective of the sacredness of its temples given it is a majority Theravadan Buddhist nation (93%) so the proper attire is modesty. In 2000 when i visited Wat Phrakeo, located smack in the middle of Bangkok, i learned that sleeveless garments aren't acceptable. I was wearing a sleeveless top and had to buy a top with sleeves from a street vendor to be allowed in. Short skirts above the knee aren't acceptable either.

(24,127 posts)...Ugly Americans exists. How ridiculously juvenile and completely disrespectful. Especially in front of a Buddha statue. If you want to hang your ass out in a foreign country, go to a brothel or massage parlor. Jerks.
They are lucky to not be sentenced to caning on those bare behinds.

(24,350 posts)Thailand doesn't do that
Though they are looking at the possibility of seven years in jail for 'committing indecency in a place of worship and violating the Computer Crimes Act for posting indecent photos on line'
They'll might have seven years to post their naked asses for others, just not on line
