Oprah's Golden Globe Awards speech stirs presidential run rumors online

Source: CBS News

Oprah Winfrey's rousing speech at the Golden Globes, as she accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award, stirred more than a standing ovation at the Beverly Hills Hilton. It inflamed rumors that she may run for president (rumors that Winfrey has sought to dispel) and lit up the internet.

The stirring oration, amid a night in which the entire female contingent in the audience wore black to highlight the "Time's Up" movement, began with Winfrey reminiscing about watching Sidney Poitier win an Oscar in 1964, sitting "on the linoleum floor of her house in Milwaukee." Poitier would become the first African American to win the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 1982, and as Oprah continued her rousing speech, she noted that girls like her were probably watching at home as she became the first African-American female to accept the award.

"At this moment, there are some little girls watching as I become the first black woman to be given this award," Winfrey said Sunday. "I want all the girls watching to know: A new day is on the horizon. When that new day finally dawns, it will be because of the magnificent women and many of them are in this room tonight."

Before she stepped off the stage, the word "presidential" was already the adjective of choice on twitter, with #Oprah2020 trending almost immediately. "SHE'S RUNNING," said several Twitter users.

Howe bout we elect someone who actually knows how to run a country.

We should have learned our lesson a long time ago with Ronald Reagan.

I don't want an entertainer to shepherd public policy that affects the lives of millions any more than I want Carrot Top to perform my next root canal.

and aside from going on the campaign trail for Obama, she has never shown an interest in politics or government. People need to get serious and make some serious choices, rather than turn politics into a popularity contest.

Here's an explanation of the reference, for the young 'uns at DU:

Topo Gigio (Italian pronunciation: [ˈtɔːpo ˈdʒiːdʒo]) was the lead character of a children's puppet show on Italian television in the early 1960s. The character, created in 1958 by artist Maria Perego, debuted on Italian television in 1959 and has been customarily voiced by actor Giuseppe "Peppino" Mazzullo and later Davide Garbolino. The Italian nickname "Gigi" is a derivative of Luigi ("Louis" ), so Topo Gigio could be translated as Louie Mouse.

Topo Gigio, a soft foam mouse with dreamy eyes and a friendly, childish personality, was very popular in Italy for many years—not only on TV, but also in children's magazines, such as the classical Corriere dei Piccoli, animated cartoons, merchandising, and movies. In 1963, the character's popularity spread to the world after being featured on The Ed Sullivan Show in the US.

with Obama in 2008, but she looked bored and disinterested, like she had better things to do. I don't think she gives a damn about politics. You probably don't remember it, because it lasted for about two seconds.

I've always found her to be superficial and self-absorbed. I'd forgotten about bringing us Dr. Phil, that alone should be unforgivable. "You get a charlatan and you get a charlatan............."

living the nightmare of electing someone with no relevant experience? And now we would announce that our alternative to Trump in 2020 is more of the same? Does anyone think that the Putins, Assads, Dutertes and Kim Jong Un's of the world wouldn't relish this? Does anyone see her standing up to these dictators? I actually hope she runs...and gets crushed early on, so we can put an end to this nonsense once and for all.

president or nothing. IMHO, a former entertainer (Franken, Schwarzeneger) or president's spouse (Clinton) or anyone for that matter who has not held any sort of public office before does not deserve to go straight to president. Do the work! Pay your dues first, if only to be on council or whatever. I want to see some humility in my prez. And I want to see a record re: how that person behaves while in office. Ideally a lifetime of some other public service outside of politics as well -

Trump and Oprah?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Trump_presidential_campaign,_2000

Donald campaigned/ran for Prez in 2000

Trump focused his campaign on the issues of fair trade, eliminating the national debt, and achieving universal healthcare as outlined in the campaign companion piece The America We Deserve, released in January 2000. He named media proprietor Oprah Winfrey as his ideal running mate and said he would instantly marry his girlfriend, Melania Knauss, to make her First Lady.
