White House Staff Could Be in Trouble if They Help Trump With Fake News Awards, Says Former WH Lawye

Source: Newsweek

By Graham Lanktree On 1/8/18 at 7:17 AM

....................................

President Donald Trump said he still plans to go ahead with "fake news" awards he first suggested in November and promised on Twitter to hand out Monday. However, he tweeted late Sunday that he would push back the announcement of winners to January 17.

“WARNING to White House staff: the president may be exempt from the rules at 5 CFR § 2635.701 et seq. on misuse of position BUT YOU ARE NOT,” tweeted Norm Eisen, who served as White House Special Counsel for Ethics in the Obama administration.

.........................................

Eisen is chair of the board of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a watchdog group that has attempted to bring a series of lawsuits against the Trump administration for ethics violations over the past year.

"If any [White House] staffers work on this or post it on the WH website, it will be a violation of the Standards of Conduct,” wrote Walter Shaub, the former director of the Office of Government Ethics, in a supporting tweet directed at the Trump administration’s press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Sunday.

I think it is disgusting that Trump is giving out this award. It degrades the Office of the Presidency!! Shame on him!

That he will never really do this?

Why am I not surprised that he is putting it off?

He thought he could threaten the media to lighten up.

I love the way the late nighters responded...Colbert's bill boards are hysterical.

Hey @PressSec & @RajShah45, Norm is right. If you or *ANY* WH staffers work on this or post it on the WH website, it will be a violation of the Standards of Conduct. Beware of laws on using federal appropriations too, if there are any visuals, certificates, handouts, or trophies.

WARNING to White House staff: the president may be exempt from the rules at 5 CFR § 2635.701 et seq. on misuse of position BUT YOU ARE NOT. If you help @potus with the below, you risk violating §§ 702, 704 & 705 forbidding use of gov time & $$$ to harm some media & aid others.

'Don't tell them it's day care, tell them they are needed to help with a special project.'

Been down this road, that is a frequently used helper to enroll the reluctant patient who is in denial and doesn't even know he's a patient.

That tells me they won't get bent out of shape at his lackeys for breaking the law.

Let's face it, the whole administration is a festering pile of corruption and lawlessness, most of which we'll only know about when the forensic autopsy is done on this era.

He would definitely need help with this ridiculous idea of his, and it is all about attempting to shut down truthful reporting about him, his administration, the Mueller investigation, and those doing his heavy lifting--the whole Republican Party and his own children.
We all see him plain as day now--a childish, lazy, megalomaniac who is so out of his league in the Oval Office that he barely does any work and is as far from presidential as a person could possibly be.
If he can't get the help he needs he will likely tweet "the winners" of his fake news awards with some bs excuse of scheduling issues.
