Sources: Oprah Winfrey 'actively thinking' about running for president
Source: CNN
Oprah Winfrey is "actively thinking" about running for president, two of her close friends told CNN Monday.
The two friends, who requested anonymity in order to speak freely, talked in the wake of Winfrey's extraordinary speech at the Golden Globes Sunday night, which spurred chatter about a 2020 run.
Some of Winfrey's confidants have been privately urging her to run, the sources said.
One of the sources said these conversations date back several months. The person emphasized that Winfrey has not made up her mind about running.

(4,341 posts)Nothing against Oprah, but I don't think that is a good idea.
Maybe if she runs for senate or some position in government first, then lets see how she does and we can then give her our support if she proves herself.
I would like Al Franken to move into having the investigation on his accusers done, then run for president.

(27,850 posts)Her speech was one of the least moving moments of the show. Sure, I had a relative who claimed she cried over it, but this is the same relative who gets excited over the Hallmark keepsake ornament every year and sends out excited hints about it ahead of time. She's also in her 50s and has a Harry Potter tree; more power to her, but it doesn't mean that I'm going to take her as a benchmark for great speeches.
It was just Oprah being Oprah, which means she pushed the buttons of a lot of gullible people. I was far more moved by the moment of unscripted solidarity between Sharon Stone and Mariah Carey ahead of time - two people who get a lot more flak than Oprah ever does for just being themselves.
I'm not trying to knock Oprah here, but there was absolutely nothing special about her speech.

(27,850 posts)I'm completely kerflummoxed. This is a woman who had a meltdown when Hermes wouldn't stay open late for her. This is a woman who inflicted Dr. Phil on the world. This is a woman who once almost took down the beef industry and then changed her mind about the information she got.
I think she's an okay person (and I actually enjoy her acting) but there was nothing original in that entire speech and absolutely nothing that stood out.
I just don't get the adulation.

(27,850 posts)I certainly don't think she's qualified to run for office. Remember her academy, and the problems it faced out of the gate? She may have meant well, but she's no more qualified to run a school system than she is to run for office. She should stick to what she's good at, but that's not the new normal in our world.

(11,258 posts)I don't understand why people actively value inexperience when it comes to politics. In every single profession out there, other than politics, you want the most experienced person out there. If you're sick, you want the most experienced doctor out there. If you want to build a house, you want an architect who's built other houses. But in politics, being a novice is an asset, even if the job entails running the largest government in the history of the planet.
I don't get it. We hired a novice on 2016, and it's not going well.

He will campaign even if he is impeached. About the only way to stop him is a jail cell, but there is about a zero percent chance of that.

And of course, there's always anti-vaccination Jenny McCarthy, and pro-AltMed-everything Dr. Oz, and Dr. Phil, who once told Oprah that he was the worst marriage counselor on the planet. What does Oprah promote him as? That's right, a fucking marriage counselor. Don't get me started about Deepak Chopra.

(40,416 posts)That is my strong opposition. Yet we see it all over DU today.
I don't give a damn about her entertainment shows, or where she appears. However, knowing about her positions on some rather important topics relating to science and medicine, I have nothing but revulsion to those positions. It seems that not many are even aware of it. Yet they seemingly want her to run for president.
I intend to disabuse them of the opinion that Oprah Winfrey is somehow all puppies and goodness. She supports, and has supported some pretty hideous people and positions. As I have said here, that excludes her as a candidate for anything. Some people see only the puppies in spite of the facts.

(5,044 posts)If you're all knowing, then I expect to see you running for POTUS. If not, why don't you just listen, for once. It's a healthier strategy vs damaging everyone that you personally disapprove of who is even considering a run. That is, unless you prefer to see Republicans in office?

(40,416 posts)You should know how to use Google.
Dr. Oz's testimony before Congress on his quackery was well documented as was Oprah's previous promotion of him which enabled him to get his TV gig.
Dr. Phil likewise is clearly an Oprah creation, although the only thing he can be accused of is practicing marriage counseling after telling Oprah he was terrible at it.
Now Jenny McCarthy's appearances on Oprah speak for themselves and are well documented. Look for yourself and consider a world where people listened to McCarthy on Oprah and didn't get their kids vaccinated. I remember polio and measles!
And just Google "Oprah John of God" and be in awe at her blinkered idiocy in the face of an outright scam artist. Then Google just "John of God" to get the dirt on this gem of a human. (I am being sarcastic, there.)
Other suggested searches "Oprah The Secret". Yup, made up quantum woo-woo, too.
My intended damage is only aimed at its target, one horrible Oprah Winfrey, who if people listened to her would be unvaccinated and going to kooks like faith healers and Deepak Chopra for their cancers. Cancer surgery by psychic surgery? Really? Oprah supports it.
longship
(40,416 posts)I wish to disabuse them of that opinion by exposing her long history of abject kookery. That is something of which too many here are apparently unaware.
I know much about Oprah's overt support of kooks and quacks. In this case, that is all that's necessary.
And yes, if she makes any move towards running for office, my tirades will continue. We don't want her anywhere near government.

She is notably incurious (my most generous adjective). She supports abject quack medicine, which is the big deal killer for me. Anti-vaccination, the best life saving medical invention ever. Alternative medicine -- there is only one medicine, based on science. She even supports a psychic surgeon scammer from Brazil who claims he can cure cancer!!!
But because she's on the televisionary set, she gets a pass? Sheesh! One is tempted to say: And people wonder how we got Drumpf in the White House.
Ask yourself those questions when Oprah's in the White House and Dr. Oz is the Surgeon General. Or horrors, psychic surgeon John of God! Maybe Jenny McCarthy can become head of the CDC.

(40,416 posts)She supports "The Secret" which is nothing more than demonstrable quantum woo-woo rubbish. Not surprisingly, Oprah also likes Deepak Chopra, the king of quantum woo-woo.
She promoted Dr. Oz, got him a TV program where his promotion of quack cures became so alarming that he was dragged before Congress to answer for it.
She never rescinded her support for anti-vaccination idiot Jenny McCarthy. Vaccines, which save lives. Oprah is against them, apparently.
And of course, then there's John of God, the cream of the crop of Oprah woo-woo. Go ahead and Google him. He does faith healing and psychic surgery. He claims he cures cancer. He has a megachurch in Brazil. He's very wealthy. Oh! And by the way, he's a fraud because psychic surgery and faith healing is always a fraud. But Oprah's a big fan girl.
Oprah has a long and storied record. And it's all well documented.
Some will not forget the horrible evil she has done in her name on her way to fame and fortune.

(14,093 posts)Oprah isn't running. This is a dumb fantasy.
This reminds me of 2016, when people could not let go of the "OMG! Elizabeth Warren is going to announce any day now!" dream, despite her repeatedly saying she wasn't running.
As a result, all the oxygen in the room was sucked up, no one would consider anyone else, and we were left with the lousy primary choice we had between a damaged Clinton and a weird, not-ready-for-primetime Bernie as the alternative.
Had people not sat around waiting for Warren to change her mind, we could have been encouraging someone like Brown or Franken to enter the field, or maybe even convinced Biden to get in after all. Instead, people were still talking up already-declined Warren well into late fall of 2015.
There are plenty of good people who can run, and obsessing on Oprah riding in a white horse and saving the day is wasting energy that could be better devoted to getting behind someone who might actually enter the race.
