Bannon group shopped anti-Trump document in 2015
Source: CNN
Before Donald Trump and Steve Bannon were enemies, they were allies. And not long before that, Bannon was part of an effort to sink Trump's presidential hopes -- even if Trump didn't know it.
A conservative watchdog group led by Bannon tried to discredit Trump in the early stages of the 2016 Republican presidential primary by shopping a document alleging that Trump had ties to mobsters, according to conservative sources and a copy of the document reviewed by CNN.
The anti-Trump opposition research was the work of author Peter Schweizer for the Government Accountability Institute, which he cofounded with Bannon in 2012. It described years of alleged business connections between Trump companies and organized crime figures, allegations that have circulated among Trump detractors for years.

(748 posts)'shopped -> photoshopped (i.e. faked)
shopped -> attempted to sell or support for sale
I realize the apostrophe makes a difference, but this meaning of the word should be discontinued.

(47,761 posts)I always use the term photoshopped myself. We tend to over abbreviate everything and it can get confusing.

(6,943 posts)"Shopped" is a word used for decades. Advocating for banning "shopped" use confounds me.

That is about the only type of people that Trump could attract. What a nightmare.

(90,801 posts)As did Conway.
I think Bannon (and Conway) still works for the Mercers even with all the brouhaha going on.

Trump's Twitter trollbots have suddenly renamed the "Steele dossier" to "Trump dossier" instead. Geeee, I wonder why?
Wouldn't want anyone searching for the new dossier to find out the details!
I had to search "trump dossier bannon" to find the CNN news. The trolls are really blasting away to suppress this news.

............. The Mercers funded an anti-Trump document then, but theyre solidly on team Trump now. So solidly that they burned all bridges to long-term asset Steve Bannon because he dared let slip some Trump-singeing statements. Bannon is attempting to scramble back into the favor of both Trump and the Mercers, but since Donald Trumps few remaining memory cells seem to be reserved for people who wronged him, it would seem unlikely that Bannon is going to be visiting the White House soon.
Of course, it also seems like the Mercers burned Trump, but they have something that Bannon doesnt 12.5 billion somethings, according to Forbes. And theyre willing to spend many, many of them to salve Trumps chapped hide.
All hands are denying that they gave this document to Trump opponents they only gave it to potential donors to Trump opponents. And news organizations. So practically no one.
CNN has a copy of the document, but hasnt yet shared the full contents, so its difficult to say how much this overlaps with some of the financial information included in the Steele dossier, which started out as a similar collection of opposition research.
