ABBEVILLE, La. (AP) A Louisiana teacher who spoke out about teacher pay at a school board meeting was handcuffed by a law officer as she screamed on the floor while the officer tried to gain control of her in a brief struggle.
In dramatic video posted by KATC-TV, the teacher yells at the officer that he'd just pushed her to the ground. The officer orders her to "stop resisting."
KATC reports that the skirmish involving Deyshia Hargrave, a middle school language arts teacher, and an Abbeville city marshal happened Monday during a meeting of the Vermillion Parish schools.
The station says the teacher had addressed the board about teacher salaries and raises, and school board president Anthony Fontana at one point ruled her "out of order."

A Louisiana teacher was handcuffed and arrested during a school board meeting on Monday after questioning a pay raise included in a new contract for a board superintendent when teachers had not received a wage increase in years.
Deyshia Hargrave, an arts teacher at a Vermilion Parish school, addressed the board during the public comments portion of the meeting, claiming the raise for superintendent and board secretary-treasurer Jerome Puyau was unwarranted, especially because teachers had not received an increase in years.
I have a serious issue with a superintendent or any person in a position of leadership getting any type of raise, she said. I feel like its a slap in the face to all the teachers, cafeteria workers, any other support staff we have. We work very hard with very little to maintain the salaries that we have.
Hargrave added that the raise was unwarranted, saying teachers and students have met their performance targets while class sizes have grown.

(47,770 posts)She didn't do anything. She didn't even raise her voice and left without resistance. There was no reason for an arrest and certainly no reason to be "taken down" and handcuffed. What is wrong with cops these days?

(47,770 posts)I find it terrifying. We hear outrageous stories on a regular basis and for the ones we hear, I would assume that are many more that we don't.
It feels too much like a police state.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) The Latest on the arrest of a Louisiana teacher at a school board meeting (all times local):
3:45 p.m.
Louisiana's governor says the handcuffing and arrest of a school teacher after she was ejected from a school board meeting "cast a negative light" on the state.
Gov. John Bel Edwards commented during his Wednesday radio show on the arrest of Deyshia Hargrave at Vermilion Parish School Board meeting. Videos show her complying with an officer's orders to leave just before she was handcuffed. She was ousted after the board president objected to her questioning the superintendent's salary hike at a time when teachers haven't had a raise in 10 years.
Edwards, who is married to a teacher and gets support from teacher unions, said he "didn't see anything that warranted that type of action."

ABBEVILLE, La. (AP) A Louisiana school superintendent complained of obscenities and death threats directed at himself, his family and staff on Wednesday after a teacher who questioned his pay raise was roughly handcuffed at a school board meeting and taken to jail.
Superintendent Jerome Puyau said the hate emails and phone calls began pouring into the Vermilion Parish School District soon after videos spread of the arrest of teacher Deyshia Hargrave, whose ouster from the meeting and subsequent arrest shocked the audience and prompted outrage online.
"I've stopped reading them because they're just so bad and disgusting," Puyau said, at times struggling to compose himself in an interview with The Associated Press. He said the school system offices went into temporary lockdown, and his daughters had to delete threats in their social media.
The turmoil follows the board's 5-3 vote Monday night approving a new 3-year contract raising Puyau's salary by roughly $30,000, to about $140,000 annually, with incentive targets that could add 3 percent per year.

(20,822 posts)is that the school board president is doubling down, claiming that the marshall "did what he was supposed to do", that he "did his job", and that there's no reason to be upset about any of it. Fascist fucker. I hope the entire board is ousted and that the voters clean house come the next election. Or, even better, that they start a recall against the board.

(ABBEVILLE) The Louisiana teacher who was ejected from a school board meeting and handcuffed after speaking out about salaries a video-recorded arrest that sparked outrage said Wednesday her treatment was appalling and encouraged others to speak out.
The fallout from Deyshia Hargraves arrest Monday night was wide-ranging, with school district officials receiving death threats and the governor saying it cast a negative light on the state. Video of the arrest was shared widely online.
By taking away my voice theyve taken away or tried to take away my First Amendment rights to speak, Hargrave said in a video posted on the Louisiana Association of Educators Facebook page. And Im appalled at this, and you should be too.
She expressed gratitude for support from students and parents in Vermilion Parish about 150 miles west of New Orleans. Go to your local school board meetings, Hargrave said. Speak out. Be vocal.
