Cornyn breaks with Grassley, says he's 'glad' Feinstein released Fusion GPS transcript

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) broke with colleague Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) on Tuesday in saying he was "glad" that Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) released the Senate testimony of Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn Simpson. I think thats a good idea," Cornyn said. "Im glad that it was done.
"I respect Chairman Grassley, and I don't really understand how this happened, but I do think more transparency is important," Cornyn said.
A spokesman for Grassley, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued a statement saying it was "confounding" that Feinstein would release a transcript of the panel's interview with Simpson in the middle of an investigation.
"Its totally confounding that Senator Feinstein would unilaterally release a transcript of a witness interview in the middle of an ongoing investigation a witness that Feinstein herself subpoenaed last year for lack of cooperation," Grassley's press secretary said in a statement.

Grassley blasts Feinstein's release of Fusion GPS transcript as 'confounding'
BY MAX GREENWOOD - 01/09/18 02:56 PM EST
A spokesman for Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) on Tuesday blasted Sen. Dianne Feinstein's (D-Calif.) release of a transcribed interview with the co-founder of the firm behind a controversial dossier on the Trump campaign's ties to Russia, calling the move "confounding."
In a statement, the spokesman, Taylor Foy, said that Feinstein's decision to release the transcript without first consulting Grassley compromises the Judiciary Committee's ability to conduct its investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
"Her action undermines the integrity of the committees oversight work and jeopardizes its ability to secure candid voluntary testimony relating to the independent recollections of future witnesses," Foy said.
He noted that no other congressional panel had released transcripts of private interviews related to the Russia investigations and suggested that Feinstein's decision may discourage potential witnesses from testifying before the Judiciary Committee.

(51,814 posts)If the committee refuses to release transcripts even when witnesses want them released, and then unfairly leaks portions of the transcript out of context to discredit the witnesses, how does that not discourage witnesses from talking to the committee? Grassley is the one who is discouraging witnesses, not Feinstein.
Indeed, him and Lindsey Graham referred the key witness in all of this, Christopher Steele, for criminal charges to the FBI. Graham and Grassley should be indicted for obstruction of justice and witness intimidation for that outrageous act.

I called Hatch, Grassely, Graham, Lee, Cruz, Corny, then Sasse. I had to leave voice mail messages for all until Sasse. His staffer told me that Feinstein just released it and I almost dropped the phone. I had called all the GOP reps on the committee on Aug 29 and had all their numbers saved. YEAH!!!

(1,608 posts)I noted with great dismay your recent comment implying that those who don't enjoy wealth were responsible for their plight due to booze, women, etc. To categorically paint the vast majority of Iowans--and Americans--in such a manner confirms what many of us have known for quite some time: you represent your "donor class," and no longer represent Iowans writ large. We knew this when you stonewalled Senate precedent and obstructed its business by refusing to hear the nomination of Mr. Garland. How can you be proud of that legacy? History will judge you harshly for undermining the function of this important aspect of the institution; you have sown discord. More recently, your shenanigan to encourage the Justice Department to go after Mr. Steele, coupled with your refusal to release the transcript of your committee's hearing with Mr. Simpson further prove that you are up to no good. You are harming our democracy--to the extent any is left. I never thought I'd see the day when, as an Iowan, I would consider Sen. Feinstein "my senator." I have resolved that you are a Trumpublican among the worst sort. DJT is not my president; nor are you my senator!
