Paul Ryan Caught Between Freedom Caucus, Democrats

Source: Roll Call

Likely short of the votes he needs to pass a stopgap government funding bill through his chamber by Friday, Speaker Paul D. Ryan spent Wednesday morning railing against Democrats — whose votes he may need to court.

A four-week continuing resolution that GOP leaders unveiled Tuesday night faces opposition from members of the House Freedom Caucus who want immediate action to increase defense spending and from Democrats who want a resolution this week on the status of some 690,000 young immigrants, known as Dreamers, who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children.

While Ryan swatted off a question about whether he has the Republican votes to pass a CR, saying GOP leaders haven’t whipped it yet, he is likely to find he’ll need to negotiate with the Freedom Caucus or with Democrats.

The speaker’s comments during a Wednesday morning news conference repeatedly criticizing Democrats for threatening to oppose the CR over immigration suggest he’s not ready to reach out to the latter.

The Freedom Caucus is the worst sub-group in Congress in maybe 150 years.

and let's not forget the freedom caucus is the re-named tea baggers! They started this whole downward spiral in 2010, and will not quit until we are the third world country they envision!

“We don’t need any Democrats in the House,” boasted senior appropriator Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.). Okay then you can't have it both ways and blame them if it fails.

Is a piss poor way to govern. It amounts to nothing more than kicking the can down the road, creating chaos, then returning back to things at the last minute.

CRS are all the Republicans can come up with. It will come back to haunt them when the government shuts down.

They have the House, the Senate, the Presidency, mostly the Supreme Court ...

... and yet they still need to get Democrats on board for the SIMPLEST MOST BASIC MEASURE?

They are so corrupt they are incompetent.

The only reason they are in power is due to voter suppression, gerrymandering, and dirty tricks. USA is in actuality a progressive Democratic nation.

We should loudly tell everyone we are done with them. Scream how they negotiated repeatedly in bad faith with the last straw being the meeting/ambush last week with Trump. Sounds like that may have even been a red line for Graham who is vowing to oppose any house backed short term plan, but we shall see. I am skeptical he can ever defy the trumpen-fuhrer.

Every Democratic statement, press conference etc should start by reminding the people and reporters that the Democratic party has no power.

The tea-party will happily shut down government for a year. They do not care.

Make Ryan scrap the 'little-boy molester rule' that has made house republicans so unable to rule.

It is a no win for him. And for those who say we have to compromise to save DACA and CHIP. Go spend time(if you can stand to) on the base websites for the Tea Party nuts. They hate DACA and CHIP with a passion. The republicans and the president will never agree to save DACA or CHIP. For heaven sake, they killed it. We are going to see thousands of young people deported this spring, summer and fall.

Then we will have a chance to turn the tables.

You think Trump is acting like a fascist now? Wait until and equal branch of government is controlled by the opposing party and starts having real, on air hearings and investigations. That is why so many republicans are retiring. Not because they do not want to be in the minority. But because they know what those hearings will look like and lead too.

is dead on arrival in the Senate. Unless he deals with the Dems, he's just passing a shit sandwich to McConnell that will never pass the Senate. This "blame the Dems" crap won't fly. They own the government right now, but can't control their own caucus, thus can't govern. My heart bleeds for the wankers.
