UPDATED: Schumer Knocks Trump's 'Inability To Clinch A Deal' Amid Shutdown

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on Sunday blamed President Donald Trump’s inability to “take yes for an answer” and strike a deal with Senate Democrats to solve the ongoing government shutdown.

Schumer said he “essentially agreed to give the President something he wants in exchange for something we both want” during a meeting on Friday. “The President picked a number for a wall,” Schumer said, referring to Trump’s proposed wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. “I accepted it.”

After meeting with Trump on Friday, Schumer said that he floated the idea of funding the wall in exchange for continued protection for undocumented immigrants covered by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Schumer on Sunday said his accord with Trump “was only tentative, no handshakes,” and ultimately did not prevent the government shutdown. “It all really stems from the President, whose inability to clinch a deal has created the Trump shutdown,” Schumer said. “He can’t take yes for an answer. That’s why we’re here.”

UPDATE:

BY JORDAIN CARNEY - 01/21/18 02:41 PM EST

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) is laying the blame for the government shutdown on President Trump, saying he can't take "yes" for an answer.

"[He] can't take 'yes' for an answer. That's why we're here, and we don't have anyone in the White House or here in the Senate, in the House ... to tell him he's got to straighten this whole thing out. He can't say 'yes' one minute and 'no' the next," Schumer said on the Senate floor. He added that he made Trump a "very generous offer" that the president walked away from.

Schumer and Senate Democrats said on Friday night that the minority leader had offered Trump a boost in defense funding and to put the U.S.-Mexico border wall on the table for discussion. White House aides have argued that Schumer is mischaracterizing negotiations.

Because Trump walked away from the deal, and other recently floated agreements, Schumer argued that the government is in a "Trump shutdown."

TV news. How can this turn out well? At least the timing of the Women's March was good for Dem PR.

and Republicans caring only about themselves, mostly about their money, their wealth.

Democrats need to wise up and see the long-range strategy of Republicans.

We have to take back the Senate and House this year.

Forget everything else. We can invite the DACA beneficiaries to come back, give them amnesty, once we have the Congress and the White House.

Right now, the focus needs to be on linking the budget shortfall that will occur (and that Republican leaders want so that they can justify cutting Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid) due to the Republican tax plan and the faulty budget.

Let the government close for a while. A lot of Republicans are contractors with the government and will scream bloody murder when their businesses feel the squeeze.

Shitler is walled in by a RW media that has already promised to crucify him over any immigration compromise...his offer to "take the heat" over any compromise has been his biggest lie of them all recently.

Tell the world dump can't make a deal - the thing he is supposedly good at - so dump will do it to prove he can too make a deal.

Duping gullible victims.

I just hope 10% of those supposed 30% that actually/really/truly voted for dump and the repuglicans actually admit they were duped. However, the little I've learned in quite a few decades, is that the gullible types don't have the brain wiring to also admit incorrect decisions.

I'm a f'in liberal. It would be so much easier on my brain to just sit on a couch and mouth-breath while fux or football was on T.V. "Please - teach me everything I need to know!"
