Pence blasts Senate Democrats in overseas speech to troops

Vice President Pence blasted Senate Democrats during his overseas trip on Sunday as the government shutdown headed into its second day.
"Despite bipartisan support for a budget resolution, a minority in the Senate has decided to play politics with military pay, but you deserve better," Pence told troops at a U.S. airbase near the Syrian border.
"You and your families shouldn't have to worry for one minute about whether you're going to get paid as you serve in the uniform of the United States," he continued. Pence told the troops the administration will "demand" Congress reopen the government.
"In fact, we're not going to reopen negotiations on illegal immigration until they reopen the government and give you, our soldiers, and your families the benefits and wages you've earned," he said.

What he did was totally unpatriotic. But none of them are anyway.
PLUS - the reason the military isn't getting paid is because McConnell yesterday, unilaterally objected to the Senate even taking a vote on continuing military pay.

(263 posts)Those service members all of whom have health care or language skills the U.S. military considers vital would be forced to leave the military under Trump policy that would rescind their protected status beginning next March.
The enlistees are a small proportion of the 800,000 immigrants who have received quasi-legal status under the program known as DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.
But they are also among the most symbolically important faces of the program, now that President Trump has called on Congress to resolve the fate of immigrants whose parents brought them to the country illegally as children.
The DACA enlistees are part of a Pentagon pilot project called Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest. The program waives certain citizenship requirements for green card holders, refugees and DACA recipients with skills that the military considers essential to the national interest.
The group includes doctors, nurses, and service members with proficiency in a language considered to be of strategic importance. Spanish is not one of those languages, but Arabic, Russian, Chinese and Korean are.
Homeland Security spokesman Dave Lapan said his agency and the Pentagon were still reviewing how to handle the military status of DACA recipients who are serving.
Under the policy adopted by the Obama administration, those whose DACA protections expired at any point in their service on active duty or under contract would no longer be eligible to serve, Lapan said.
"We're still figuring out what the different outcomes are," Lapan said.
The Pentagon declined to say whether how those who lose their protected status would be given an honorable, general or administrative discharge.

(7,404 posts)Is named McConnell. Sen. McCaskill (D-MO) offered an amendment to pay the troops and McConnell refused to bring it to the Senate floor for a vote - Indeed, in the last year McConnell has not allowed a single amendment by any Democrat to be brought to the floor for a vote.
But this false claim by Pence puts him in the same boat as Trump when it comes to telling the truth. Virtually every word out of Pence's mouth is a lie. And they will continue to lie until the news networks decide to fact-check people on the spot.

(2,584 posts)I never remember any politician blaming by name a political party that is responsible for a
shut down right in front of them. The military is supposed to be none political
overall through we know individualy the members lean one way or another.
It's like their making the military their own private army by blaming one side right in front of them.
Members have no choice but to stand there and listen.
