Pelosi pans Trump's $20B wall funding: 'Oh, come on'

Source: The Hill

BY MIKE LILLIS - 01/21/18 03:46 PM EST

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Sunday spurned President Trump’s $20 billion request for a border wall, suggesting Democrats in the lower chamber would oppose that figure even if it ensured a deal to protect co-called Dreamers.

“All of the money he wants for his wall? Oh, come on, come on, come on,” Pelosi said at a press briefing in the Capitol.

Pelosi was reacting to a new ABC News report on a possible deal between Trump and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) combining $20 billion for new border wall construction with strong legal protections for the young undocumented immigrants enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, or Dreamers.

Pelosi suggested she’s open to new wall funding –– a shift in tone for the Democratic leader –– but also emphasized that any such amount should be determined by the expressed need of border authorities, not a figure floated by the president, which she suggested is arbitrary.

They're having problems hiring new agents, and keeping the ones they have because of pay for being so isolated with their families , some in the middle of nowhere. The money should go for that, building up area's for these officer's and their families, and increase their pay. Not a wall that'll just be taken down after they're ousted from office.

So long as Trump comes up with the money by hisownself. Russia likes walls, for instance. Perhaps they may want to shore up their investment.

The claimed net worth is wildly inflated already. This $20 billion is just for starters. That's 20x what "it has", at least.

to the wall. I'm sure if they put smart people together to come up with such an alternative - they can come up with something better than a $20 billion wall.

Then they have a negotiation tool to use against Trump & the Repugs.

The Dems need to make the case that spending $20B is just a waste of money just so Trump can say he kept his campaign promise. At that - he is only keeping half of his campaign promise because there is no way Mexico will pay for it.

If we still want border security the Dems can make the case that we want border security as well but we can do it less expensively and save the taxpayers money to boot.

This would get the Dems on the offensive for this issue.

It's about time the Dems start thinking out of the box.

Equal or better border security with a savings to the taxpayers. Trump's plan is a waste of money and walls aren't foolproof. I believe there is probably research pointing out the weaknesses of walls. I also believe there are plenty of better alternatives.

Democrats advised better sensors, use of drones, roads for patrol access through remote areas, and other more practical methods.

Trump still wants his wall. It was a campaign promise and his price for DACA is being able to deliver on it (less the Mexico paying for it part, I guess).

How about one of his precious golf courses that gets cut in half because the wall goes thru it? You will need a passport to play there..how fun!

I remember the Maginot line. It was well constructed, well designed. Perfect.

But the Germans just went around it.

Unwanted immigration will end when employers are severely punished for hiring people without visas or other papers.

People come here to work and earn money. If we really don't want them, then we won't hire them or pay them. It's up to the employers of the country.

The wall is a sheer waste of money.

Even the Iron Curtain was eventually crossed and brought down.

Remember the fall of the Berlin Wall?

Walls don't work to keep people out. (But they do make it hard for people to leave.)

We can even leave it open to him to design, plan, approve, etc. If he wants every segment emblazoned with his name, 75 foot tall, with invisible segments so that noone on our side gets hit with bags of drugs being thrown over, and he wants companies that he owns to do the construction, fine. Trump wall, 100%, get er dun.

Only one condition. Every penny of funding must come from Mexico, Upfront, with no concessions or tradeoffs by the US government. Trump opens an account, Mexico deposits money, Trump spends that money on a wall.

who worship dump. There is no legitimate reason for a "wall." Border security enhancements at targeted areas, yes. But that's not what this is--the wall is an abstract concept standing for keeping brown people out.

If dems agree to a wall, just delay the start date until after the 2018 election.

wall, watch the videos on YouTube about the Maginot Line. The French constructed an amazing wall, a fortified wall to keep the Germans out. It did not work.

Then there is the Iron Curtain and the Berlin Wall. They didn't work either.

Walls create the illusion of security. They are not worth the money invested in them.

This! And also we can't afford it after this massive effing tax break for the wealthy they just passed. It's amazing how they think that $20B for a wall is so easy to come up with but meals-on-wheels and healthcare for poor children is too expensive. Fuck the wall! politically was the most important? He as much as admitted it is only a political move!

As I heard on the Sunday shows, Congress will first authorize any wall spending, and then it goes to Appropriations, where they decide exactly how much will be needed and how spent. So even if this thing is included in a deal, it's only a preliminary step, not a done deal.

edit to add link:http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-08-04/donald-trump-pena-nieto-mexico-wall-leaked-call-transcript/8773814

Because you and I are both at a point now where we are both saying we are not to pay for the wall. From a political standpoint, that is what we will say.

We cannot say that anymore because if you are going to say that Mexico is not going to pay for the wall, then I do not want to meet with you guys anymore because I cannot live with that. I am willing to say that we will work it out, but that means it will come out in the wash and that is okay. But you cannot say anymore that the United States is going to pay for the wall.

I am just going to say that we are working it out. Believe it or not, this is the least important thing that we are talking about, but politically this might be the most important talk about. But in terms of dollars — or pesos — it is the least important thing.
