White House presents immigration plan with path to citizenship for 1.8 million

Source: Politico

By RACHAEL BADE 01/25/2018 04:53 PM EST

The White House presented Congress Thursday with an immigration reform plan that would satisfy a key Democratic demand — offering a path to citizenship for 1.8 million undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children—in exchange for dramatic restrictions on immigration going forward and a $25 billion fund for border security.

In a call with Republican Hill staffers Thursday afternoon, a senior White House official outlined a one-page framework. The official called the new proposal “a compromise position that we believe… will get 60 votes in the Senate” and “a framework that ultimately will lead to passage of a law.”

The official told Republican staffers that the White House proposal would establish a $25 billion trust fund for a border defense system, including a wall along the Mexican border — a key campaign promise made by President Donald Trump that he has repeatedly indicated must be included in a final deal. That money would also go toward technology and security at the Canadian border.

The framework also eliminates the visa lottery and curbs U.S. migration by extended families, a fundamental change to existing immigration policy. New citizens would be able to sponsor their immediate families — spouses and children — to legally enter the country, but other relatives would be excluded.

We might be able to change some of the more awful provisions later on, but right now, take it.

Notice that the key to their goal is merely 60 senate votes, not legislation that is favored by vast majority of citizens. This is the usual republican definition of "compromise" -- all or nothing on our initial proposal. Sorry, but no. It's quite telling that we now have people feeling that the way you legislate is to just "go for it" on a cabal's diktat.

If there's some sort of guarantee with that, then yeah, it's probably the best that will be offered.

25B for a wall is a joke, but we've blown more money than that on stupid projects (Iraq, Tax Cut, etc).

The DACA folks deserve a chance at citizenship. They know no other country or culture, not deeply anyway.

"The White House will also ask for additional money to hire more U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents as well as immigration judges, attorneys and prosecutors. And the administration will propose closing what the official called legal “loopholes” that “make it almost impossible to deport those immigrants who show up illegally.”

"As a sweetener to Democrats, the White House plan would allow an estimated 1.8 million so-called Dreamers, young immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children, to apply for legal status, remain in the country, and possibly seek citizenship."

...and possibly seek citizenship."

Trump gets everything he wants, while providing crumbs to the Dreamers...what else is in this plan???

because it's a secret. If they find out then they won't pay. We have to surprise them with it.

I see $25 billion being used for better purposes. If the Democratic was smart they would question the wall and suggest better uses for that money.

On the surface, it looks like adult children will not be able to petition for parents (it is already difficult to do this anyway), and for citizens to petition for siblings. It doesn't mention total number of visa allotments and to which countries they are distributed to. I am highly skeptical given this administration's anti-non-white immigration preferences.

Mexicans own planes and boats. Drug cartels and the Chinese are using our postal service. As far as illegal immigrants, Trump also wants to close "legal loopholes" for deportation. I don't know what he talking about with "legal loopholes", but illegal immigrants are covered by the Constitution as is every one on American soil. Also I want to see what the path to citizenship is exactly. And all of this has to be in one bill so nothing can be changed. For full disclosure, I do not pay taxes, but if everything is above board, 25 billion is okay with me.

Especially when it's to be used to reinforce a police state, walls on both our southern and northern borders, more ICE/Gestapo agents??

I'm not cool with it, and if anyone actually believes that this administration is going to do anything above board, they would be better off doing a self lobotomy!!!
