The Trump administration official in charge of the Office of Refugee Resettlement discussed trying to use a controversial, scientifically unproven method to reverse an undocumented teen's abortion, according to documents reviewed by VICE News.
Scott Lloyd, a longtime crusader against abortion who heads the agency that oversees undocumented minors who enter the country without their parents, spoke with staffers about trying to reverse the abortion of a pregnant teen in their custody, according to a deposition he underwent as part of a lawsuit between the Trump administration and the American Civil Liberties Union.
In the past few years, opponents of abortion have championed the idea of halting a medication abortion midway by using the hormone progesterone. Anti-abortion activists have pushed governors in four states to sign laws requiring healthcare providers to tell patients about this so-called abortion reversal method. But there is no credible medical evidence that such a procedure works, and the mainstream medical community worries that using it amounts to experimentation on women.
Nevertheless, Lloyd said in the deposition that he and his staff discussed the possibility of abortion reversal. Emails obtained by VICE News, including one sent last March to the clinic handling the abortion of a teenager in ORRs custody, also mention progesterone explicitly and show that officials had questions about the feasibility of using it for the purpose of aborting a chemical abortion process.

(12,701 posts)Is this based on some theory based on early procedure that attempts (sometimes successfully) to prevent some miscarriages that may take several days to occur? After all, there are so many different combinations of various types of situation that may - or may not - trigger a miscarriage; some environmental, some genetic, some hormonal, some based on the mother's health, some based on fetal health or development.
I'm thinking that if the abortion procedure is already in progress - even if it's a chemical procedure, that's pretty much it. No amount of "heroic application" of hormones and chemicals would be able to reverse it without significant damage to both the mother and the fetus - if it did succeed.
On edit - Besides, if staffers at a facility forced someone to take "the reversal" against their will, wouldn't that be kidnapping?

(4,221 posts)and this kind of unethical experimentation on humans (coercion to change the wishes of the patient, going against medical advice of the original treating physician, mixing hormones, off-label use of a prescription, going against the scientific consensus of the medical community) should constitute human experimentation and his state licensing board should open a case on this "doctor".

(54,519 posts)From the headline, I thought it meant Trump supporters got to rape the women to get them pregnant again.
Well...knowing those people, I wouldn't put it past them..........

(8,758 posts)Based on the headline, I fully expected this to go in a different direction from what I read..forcible rape and impregnating were involved in my first impression though junk science and torture is hardly a consultation.
I put nothing out of scope with these idiots...they are seriously sick fucks.

(29,243 posts)"Delgado had never heard of anyone reversing a medical abortion before, but he had an idea for how to try. A medical abortion comes in the form of two pills: Mifepristone, the first, works by blocking the hormone progesterone and preventing a pregnancy from continuing. Misoprostol, the second pill, is taken 24 to 48 hours later to cause contractions that empty the uterus.
Delgado fixed on progesterone, which is critical for sustaining pregnancy. Progesterone is cheap and widely covered by insurance. Its often used to boost fertility and given to women at risk for miscarriage. Delgado thought that a woman who had taken mifepristone could increase the chance of continuing the pregnancy by first skipping the misoprostol and then taking a lot of progesterone multiple times a week throughout her first trimester to overpower the mifepristone. The idea was less of a reversal, really, than a halt."

(12,841 posts)It may as well be called that, because the idea behind the procedure is preposterous.
