Democrats test liberal messages in midterm House elections

Source: Associated Press

By BILL BARROW and THOMAS BEAUMONT

A single-payer health care advocate in South Texas. A gun restriction supporter in Dallas. Cheerleaders in Arkansas and Iowa for public option health care.

Weeks into the primary season, Democrats’ midterm class is shaping up to test what liberal messages the party can sell to the moderate and GOP-leaning voters who will help determine control of the House after the November election.

It’s not one size fits all, with every candidate checking every box wanted by the activists driving the opposition to President Donald Trump and the GOP Congress, and Democratic voters typically aren’t tapping the most liberal choices in targeted districts. But, taken together, the crop of nominees is trending more liberal than many of the “Blue Dog” Democrats swept away in Republicans’ 2010 midterm romp.

That means voters now represented by a Republican will be asked to consider some or all of the mainstream Democratic priorities that may have been considered “too liberal” in the past: more government involvement in health insurance, tighter gun laws, a path to citizenship for people in the country illegally, reversing parts of the GOP tax law, support for LGBTQ rights.

I agree. Going out and pushing free governement stuff, elimination of all guns, bathrooms for transgenders is just NOT GOING TO MOVE the needle.

It has to be about jobs, money, life, future, for all people not just minorities.

4. Wow... "bathrooms for transgenders"?

I'm not transgender, but I support human, civil, and equal rights for the transgender community.

And "free government stuff"... who doesn't that appeal to? Unless it means 'other people... THOSE people getting free government stuff'.

We need to stop playing to the right wing's straw man, we need to stop being afraid of it.

11. So do I. I support treating all people with respect unless they dont deserve it.

However when our message is about the bathroom you can use and the GOP message is about getting you a freaking job.. its easy to see why so many turned away from Democrats

We have to have better messaging. We have to fight back.

5. No Democratic candidate is pushing for "elimination of all guns."

As for "free government stuff" (to use your right-wing framing), I'd say Medicare for All has quite a lot to do with money, life and future for ALL people.

You might want to study up on liberal moral values before mocking us.

As for what to push, agreed, we should push things that will benefit the vast majority of voters, regardless of party. Let them see the benefits, the security benefits, of voting for sane people.

Once we win over enough voters, we can help them see that a smart society does well by doing good, by including everybody in the benefits of social justice.

BS I am a democrat that is pissed off. We are slowly losing this fight and saying we need to focus on messages that all people are included in.

Just because you dont like the message doesnt mean im mocking you.

8. Sorry Lance; we've had a lot of Russian / RePutin trolls here and I am over-sensitized.

We are hyper-vigilant about terms like "free government stuff" that come from the RW.

I'm pissed too and frustrated that we let the bad guys continue to play dirty.

No Problem. Before we can start making a difference we have to be able to accept what is happening.

The GOP are doing ruthless things and arent afraid to do something deplorable or despicable. They are doing this daily.

Meanwhile democrats want to do things perfectly correct, by the books as nice people.

Sometimes the Thug beats up the nice guy and we have to get back up and fight back. Its like democrats are getting slapped around and dont do anything back. Its discouraging.

When the president is a crook, call him a crook. When his entire party is transformed into the RePutin Party, call them Russian thugs. In public, in the halls of Congress, on TV. Simple as that.

When they steal a Supreme Court seat, name names: Say "Mitch McConnell stole a Supreme Court seat." Say it on TV, in the halls of Congress. Simple as that.

I agree and the media is not wanting to go all in that he is a crook and the GOP are complicity.

They seem to want to say, there are 2 sides and its politics, etc

Fox news doesnt do that. They are pushing propaganda to their people and the right wing are trying to expand that propaganda to many more TVs with the sinclair expansion.

Democrats are going WOW that aint right and then they go on drinking their beer or watching a movie, etc while the GOP are manuvering to make large scale changes in out country.

The GOP did steal the seat and democrats where upset but moved on like we where powerless.
The GOP has already made their perch very nice. They can be deplorable and lie and cheat and doing all these ruthless things and we democrats and the rest of the country go... well thats just them..

When democrats get into office we have to be pure and perfect and dot our Is and cross the T's etc, etc or we get hammered.

I am discouraged.

10. the fictitious arguments you ascribe exist no where but the imaginations of conservatives.

You're arguing points no candidate is making. No candidate is arguing for 'free stuff.' No candidate is arguing for elimination of all guns. It's absurd to believe as much and counter-productive to allege as such.

In fact, the fictitious arguments you ascribe exist no where but the imaginations of conservatives and hate radio. And their own needles move regardless of what any local democratic platform is doing.

13. But the GOP message that we are for free stuff and for bathrrooms is whats being talked about.

But the GOP message that we are for free stuff and for bathrrooms is whats being talked about.

Sure Connor Lamb had to lean a little right to get the nomination.

But all we hear is the GOP message. The GOP is painting the picture of democrats right now.

Democrats are not for religion
Democrats are identity politics
Democrats are free education, government free health care.
Democrats want to take your guns away.

This is the message the GOP are successfully painting of Democrats. Nobody is really countering this so its slowly being accepted as true.
