Mark Sanford concedes to Katie Arrington in SC District 1 race, losing his first election

Source: Post and Courier

In a monumental upset fueled by a Donald Trump tweet, U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford lost his Republican primary to Katie Arrington, a one-term state lawmaker who made loyalty to the president the centerpiece of her campaign.

The defeat, which carries national implications, marks the first time Sanford has lost an election, which began with his first congressional bid in this very district in 1994.

President Trump — making a move unprecedented in South Carolina history — in a late afternoon tweet asked state voters to replace Sanford with Arrington, going so far as to say Sanford is "better off in Argentina," a reference to his adulterous affair when he was governor in 2009.

It sends a message to candidates & reps & Senators that Trump has the power to kill their careers, if they do or say anything against him.

With his record, he just shouldn't have this kind of power with the public. But he does. This is not good news, and I hope the Dem leaders are taking note.

Short-term it probably prevents the GOP congress from doing much in the next three months.

But in November it probably HELPS the Democrats. Our chances of flipping this seat are still not great, but they just got a LOT better.

With his record, he just shouldn't have this kind of power with the public. But he does. This is not good news, and I hope the Dem leaders are taking note.

He has this power because the GOP propaganda media (Fox, Limbaugh, Drudge, IJR, Daily Caller, Prager "U&quot all lie to the public, and anyone who consumes that media believes the lies.

We won't fix the country until we fix the GOP propaganda media.

ratings soared while under investigation because of it. It was known that opening an investigation into Trump-Russia would have the same effect. Right wing media are trumpeting that this phony attack on the president they elected is an attack on democracy itself.

So yes to all, but they have another pattern, of turning on leaders who turned out to be weak, instead of strong, losers instead of winners. Right now he not only could shoot someone in the street and have 40 million people angrily claim it's a Democratic lie, but he can also betray them directly by trying make mandated coverage for preexisting conditions unconstitutional. For now.

Interesting piece even though doesn't break support out by party or ideology. In early 1971 his approval rating finally dropped below 50% for the first time. Think

Republicans stood strong by him almost all through Watergate. Then the crash in the final months, finishing at a 24% OVERALL approval rate.

Itm, at least we lose Tax Heist Sanford, who's among the most extreme conservatives in congress.

CNN.com: "He aligned himself with comments from retiring Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker on Wednesday that the party was in a "cult-like situation" with the President, referring a question about the atmosphere to what Corker said. "It's a very tribal environment right now," Sanford said. "The playing field of ideas that many of us came into in the class of '94 ... it's devolved to: are you for or against the President, are you for or against Trump?"

I believe that healthcare is a right, not a privilege. No one in America should go bankrupt because they get sick. In the United States, no one should forego necessary or preventative care because they are unable to afford it.
After going through the medical uncertainties of my wife’s pregnancy and the arrival of my son, I understand how stressful—both emotionally and financially—the increasing cost of healthcare can be. In times when your family members are at their most vulnerable, we shouldn’t have to focus on the costs.

With Republicans trying to rip away coverage from millions of Americans and raise premiums and deductibles, as well as the cost of prescription drugs, it’s time we take a stand. One of the many ways we can improve our current healthcare system is by encouraging the federal government to negotiate with drug companies to lower medication prices for people on Medicare, similar to how the Veterans Affairs Department does. Another possibility is allowing more middle class families to qualify for tax breaks to reduce their healthcare costs. We should also explore lowering the Medicare age requirement from 65 to 55 over the course of ten years.

Every Child Deserves A High Quality Education
As a product of public schools, I understand how we treat our students is how we treat our future. Every child deserves access to a quality education and supporting our educators needs to be a priority. It is imperative that our public schools are properly funded so that every student receives the same opportunity. South Carolina faces a major teacher shortage, in part, because we pay our educators less than neighboring states.
Let’s support our teachers by raising their pay. As your Congressman, I will work to ensure that the federal government makes available supplemental funds for teacher salaries in states that are working to increase recruitment, training and retention of teachers.

I will also fight to make college affordable for every student in South Carolina by increasing access to and protecting Pell Grants. We cannot continue to saddle future generations with debt that prevents financial freedom and economic growth, so I will be a supporter of legislation that allows students to refinance their student loan debt at lower interest rates.

Ending The School To Prison Pipeline
As your Congressman, I will work towards allocating resources that support at-risk children so we can end the school to prison pipeline. This disturbing trend where children are being funneled into the juvenile and criminal justice systems is deeply troubling. The reality is that school disciplinary policies disproportionately affect black students with harsher punishments than white students. A majority of the students that are being punished and pushed out have learning disabilities or histories of poverty, abuse or neglect and would benefit from additional educational and counseling services. Let’s invest in our children and prevent this vicious trend from dictating the futures of vulnerable students.

Tackling Our Overcrowded Prisons
Defending Our Voting Rights And Getting Big Money Out of Politics
Our democracy is under attack by politicians who are deliberately making it harder for people to vote. I will fight for fair access to the voting booth and work to ensure everyone’s voice is being fairly represented.
I believe we can improve our current system by implementing automatic voter registration. When you turn 18, you’re immediately registered to vote.

We also need to end partisan gerrymandering in this country so voters are choosing their politicians, not the other way around.

I have taken a pledge to not accept any PAC or special interest money. Dark money is being funneled in from unknown donors and swaying our elections. That’s why I have drawn a line in the sand and I’m returning this seat back to the people. I’m only accepting individual contributions from people like you.

Creating Jobs, Training The Workforce And Promoting Small Business
My grandfather, Almond Cunningham, went to work in the 1930s under the Tennessee Valley Authority, which was created under President Roosevelt’s New Deal. This program provided jobs to locals, as well as affordable hydroelectric power to surrounding communities. Our country is in dire need of big ideas to address the problems we face. I will fight for policies that will encourage job growth and livable wages for hard-working South Carolinians. Right now, we have a representative in Washington who is not bringing home resources for infrastructure projects and not fighting to improve our job market.
We need to ensure that our workforce has the proper training when we bring jobs home. We can do that by providing work-training programs that support apprenticeships and encourage educational institutions and companies to team up to prepare workers for the 21st century economy.

Entrepreneurship has become increasingly difficult these days and my wife and I have witnessed firsthand how tough it can be to get started. Here in Charleston, the cost of renting a commercial space is higher per square foot than the national average. We should be looking at incentives that allow people to pursue their dreams because we need more leaders that are creating local jobs and locally sourced products.

We need to end tax incentives that allow corporations to outsource jobs. Many Americans have seen their jobs shipped overseas and it’s not right that the corporations continue to see their profits soar. We truly need to invest in our people and keep jobs here on US soil—and I’ll be a fighter for the working class.

I Believe In Science
As an Eagle Scout, I spent many weekends in the great outdoors, camping and hiking. Being on or near the ocean, fishing and diving are my favorite hobbies. It was my love of marine environment that led me to study ocean engineering, where I could be near the water and preserve it for future generations to enjoy.

In the Lowcountry, our natural resources provide a high quality of life for citizens, as well as drive the local economy.

I believe climate change is the single greatest non-military threat to our nation—especially living in a coastal region, where we see the impacts of rising sea levels and harsh storm systems firsthand. I believe this challenge presents an opportunity to invest in clean energy that promotes job growth and eliminates dirty energy sources, like drilling off our coast for oil, once and for all. Let’s focus on renewable sources like solar and wind to create a high tech, green economy that preserves our natural resources for many years to come
Supporting Our Troops
My father proudly served his country in the Vietnam War and was lucky enough to return home safely. Too many of our country’s heroes are less fortunate though. For me, supporting our troops means:

First, the promise we have made to our soldiers is to always have their back. That begins with equipping them with proper equipment on the battlefield. It extends to providing them with support during conflicts. And it continues with providing them with the care they need--both physically and mentally--upon their return home. We should work to strengthen the Veterans Affairs Department by cutting red tape and reducing inconvenient paperwork requirements. Government bureaucracy should not be an obstacle to treatment or receiving benefits that veterans have earned from their service. During service, the military knows every detail of your medical history, but once you’re out, you have to be readmitted into the system and that needs to be fixed.

Secondly, supporting our troops means helping transition soldiers back into the civilian life, because unemployment, homelessness and mental health among veterans shouldn’t be something they are tackling alone. Helping soldiers gain employment or start their own business needs to be a priority. We also know that Post-Traumatic Stress and suicide is higher among our heroes; we need to make sure they get the care they deserve.
Women’s Health And Equal Pay For Equal Work
Throughout the past year I have spent countless hours in OB’s offices with my wife, Amanda, in anticipation of our son, Boone. And in those nine months, something became very clear to me: those doctor offices are small and there is no room for anyone other than a woman, a doctor, and a supportive spouse.

In Congress, I will fight to keep the government out of intimate healthcare decisions between a woman and her doctor and I will oppose efforts to defund Planned Parenthood and other women’s health resources.

Beyond healthcare, I will always support policies that advance women’s equality in the workplace. In South Carolina, women make less than 80% of what men do for the exact same work. This is unacceptable. I will always support efforts to close the gender wage gap once and for all: equal pay for equal work should not be controversial.
Equal Protection Under The Law
I believe in equal protection under the law for everyone, no matter who you are, or who you love. We have made so much progress towards equality under the law and in our society as a whole, but there is still much that we can do to improve the climate for our LGBTQ community. Let’s pass the Equality Act and prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity with regard to employment, housing, credit, education, public spaces and services, federally funded programs, and jury service--so that everyone can participate equally in all aspects of American life.
Common Sense Gun Safety Legislation
When I was a sophomore in high school, there was a school shooting at Heath High School about 30 minutes from my home. A 14-year old killed three students and injured five more. That was the first school shooting I can remember. Almost 20 years later, Dylann Roof killed nine people at Emanuel AME Church, about two blocks from my law office. Earlier this year, two students were killed at Marshall County High School in Benton, Kentucky, the town in which my father grew up. In February, 17 people were killed in a school shooting in Parkland, Florida, where my brother, his wife, and their daughter live. It's easy to think that these shootings are somehow following me, but truth is, they’re following all of us.

In Congress, I will fight for common sense gun legislation. We need mandatory universal background checks and longer waiting periods; purchasing a gun should take more time than picking up your dry cleaning. I will also support a ban on the private purchase of assault-style weapons in the United States. We have a mass shooting every 60 hours in this country. And it seems like the more frequent they are, the less likely our leaders are to do anything about it. I'm sure the thoughts and prayers of Americans are appreciated by the families of the victims, but they don't prevent it from happening again. That takes action.

Sanford managed 46% and the winner barely topped 50%. I'm not sure whether this might indicate a schism of sorts among GOP voters in this district, but if a blue wave largely fueled by a need to put the brakes on Trump results in a closer race, then it might be closer yet where an incumbent goes down to a primary defeat. Some of Sanford's loyal supporters might pass on the '18 Congressional race, and others might actually vote for Democratic candidate Joe Cunningham. I recall that Stephen Colbert's sister ran against Sanford when the seat was open some years ago, and she lost but not by a landslide. Some surprises will be in store come November, hopefully this race might be one of them.

Which already tends to have low turnout during primaries. The coastal areas, where Sanford's district is located have some of the lowest turnout in the state. I haven't seen any actual numbers to substantiate this, however.

If this holds, it suggests Trump's base was more motivated than Sanford's base, but the independent voter was not. This is good news in that the Republicans are going to have to spend a lot of time and money energizing the base to fend off challengers.
