Hawaii governor, David Ige, wrote to the President on Wednesday to ask for Washingtons help for those displaced by the explosions.
Since the volcano started erupting on May 3, more than 600 homes have been destroyed by the lava.
It is thought many of those are the primary dwelling for people who live there.
Mr Iges request on Wednesday stressed Hawaii had been so far dependant on charities for help.

But somehow I doubt it'll be handled much better.

(58,785 posts)This is local newspaper coverage. There is also other local and national coverage. 700 homes lost so far. Apparently disaster assistance was approved a day after HI's governor requested it, 2 days ago. Trump's plane stopped in HI for refueling on way back from Singapore 3 days ago. He didn't get off, but maybe being there made some kind of impact on his flighty mind...?
On Friday, a FEMA relief center will be set up at Keaau High School where county, state, and federal agencies will gather information from affected residents.
Residents whose homes were destroyed by the lava, or whose homes are inaccessible due to the lava flow, should register at the center for possible assistance.

Hawaii News Now spoke to a man named Shawn who was one of the first people in line at the Disaster Recovery Center.
He says his Leilani Estates home is still standing, but the ground beneath it gave way, shifting it from it's foundation.
For more than a month he and his two dogs have been living in a car. ... "It's a very slow process people. Slow. It's almost at a standstill," said Shawn. "People have literally lost their homes, their livlihood, their jobs. They're sleeping in fields. We're homeless. Come on people. Do something."

(35,393 posts)Not that we care. Until we do.
If it's offered before it's requested, it depends on the politics of the situation. (R) governor's shamed, humiliated and embarrassed by it? Great. (D) governor's shamed, humiliated, and embarrassed by it, and the disaster's been politicized, weaponized, and it's electioneering. If the president's (R).
Flip the D and R and you flip the justice of the situation. Meaning that before the president or governor does anything, others have already politicized and weaponized human misery for political purposes.

Apparently they chose to do that versus going to a shelter. Seems like some trailers may be in order, although the logistics of getting those there would be nightmarish due to this being an island.
