US Isn't Just Separating Children From Their Parents. It Also Has No Plan For Reuniting Them.
Source: Buzzfeed News
Even after a parent has completed their sentence for illegal entry, the US has no way to ensure that they are reunited with their children while they wait for an immigration judge to rule in their case.

MCALLEN, Texas Two months after the Trump administration began separating children from their parents along the US-Mexico border, immigration authorities cannot say what procedures exist to reunite children with their parents after the parents' illegal-entry cases have been resolved but their immigration case is still pending.
Nearly 2,000 children were separated from their parents in the first six weeks of the policy, ending May 31, according to statistics released by the Department of Homeland Security. But how many of those children's parents DHS said the 1,995 children who'd been separated had been accompanied by 1,940 adults have already had their illegal-entry cases resolved is unclear. Most such cases are resolved within days or weeks.
How and if US officials intend to reunite children whose parents are waiting for an immigration judge to make a decision on their case also is unknown.
"The logistics of the reunification are made on a case-by-case basis," Danielle Bennett, a spokesperson for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the agency with responsibility for enforcing immigration law, told BuzzFeed News. But she said she could not give statistics for the number of families that have been reunified since the "zero tolerance" policy was announced April 19. Nor could she give examples of a successful reunification.

(45,040 posts)We seem pretty far into banana republicanism. Might need some blue helmets to go Antibbe and extract the children. As silly as it sounds, they desperately need rescuing. Would you want your child in Trumpist hands?

(58,724 posts)An Associated Press (AP) investigation revealed in 2017 that more than 100 United Nations (UN) peacekeepers ran a child sex ring in Haiti over a 10-year period and none were ever jailed. The report further found that over the past 12 years there have been almost 2,000 allegations of sexual abuse and exploitation by peacekeepers and other UN personnel around the world. AP found the abuse is much greater than previously known. After the AP report, U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, urged all countries to hold UN peacekeepers accountable for any sexual abuse and exploitation. As early as 2004, Amnesty International reported that under-age girls were being kidnapped, tortured and forced into prostitution in Kosovo with UN and NATO personnel being the customers driving the demand for the sex slaves. The UN's department of peacekeeping in New York acknowledged at that time that "peacekeepers have come to be seen as part of the problem in trafficking rather than the solution".

(34,195 posts)That's what CBS evening news (or was it NBC?) said tonight.
If and when the adults are released, they are given an 800 phone number to call and search the hundred or so
camps to relocate their children.
How they get together is then up to them to figure out.

Im beginning to think the phrase "separation of families" is too benign - theres a more systemic cruelty going on.
