A group of more than 600 United Methodist clergy are bringing church law charges against U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions over a "zero tolerance" policy on U.S. immigration, which has resulted in the separation of families on the U.S.- Mexico border.
Sessions is a member of Ashland Methodist Church in Mobile, Al.
The group said in a June 18 statement that Sessions violated Paragraph 2702.3 of the denominations's Book of Discipline. Sessions is charged with child abuse, immorality, racial discrimination in separating children from their parents.
They also accused Sessions with "dissemination of doctrines contrary to the standards and doctrine of the United Methodist Church," in reference to Sessions' quoting a bible verse to defend the "zero tolerance" policy.
The Rev. William Lawrence told the United Methodist News Service that anyone in the church can bring a charge against anyone else. While complaints against laypersons in the church are not uncommon, a formal complaint bringing charges is rare.

I hate to be the one to break it to you, but Jeff Sessions doesn't care what the UMC thinks. He doesn't even care what the Bible actually says. Like his boss, he is only interested in the power the office provides.

No. This matters. Whether or not Sessions cares, it matters that our Methodist church is taking a stand. For immigrants. For children. For justice.

Well that is some good news. Do Methodists excommunicate? I think this qualifies.

(13,903 posts)Man, isn't that a little too "hippie" a church for a christofascist theocrat like Sessions...

(16,296 posts)Condemnation/excommunication/stoning/rendering of the garments? Religious silliness - get out of your pews and vote for politicians that have some moral character. Sessions was and still is a bigot and how can his actions now be considered over-the-top. He is a poster child of all that is wrong in politics.

(2,158 posts)Sessions and his family would be thrown out of the church and the Methodist faith. If his adult kids go to that church, they will be affected too, and the South is very big on "the sins of the father". They will be tarred with the same brush, and they will probably choose to leave the church. In the deep south, this is very serious - it will echo all across town, and cause the Sessions family to be "talked about", even in the schools. They will probably wind up going to a baptist church, and baptists are true fundies down there - that's where the klanners and racists go.

(62,483 posts)all this religious foofaraw won't amount to anything to Sessions. Doubt it will even put a tiny nick in his ego.
I think there is a sneaky secret among wealthy Republicans - they have never believed any of that religious stuff. They just wear it around work and town for show.

(24,662 posts)They should do nothing; after all, silence is the very best way to counter evil and cruelty. The evangelicals are in charge, so why should anyone else stand up and say "Not all Christians" or better yet, "That's not Christian?" Even more silliness: " All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent." Edmund Burke

(11,537 posts)All of us here on DU talking amongst ourselves about Sessions and Spankys evil policies will have very little effect, other than inciting a few of us to contact our Congress Critters demanding action. Sessions being condemned by his own Church WILL get noticed.

(24,662 posts)It's not called the Bible Belt for nothing. His family will be shamed, friends and relatives will be emboldened to speak up. This is not something UM take lightly...it is a slap upside the head and he will feel it.

Legacies are being ruined by these decisions by members of the Trump Admin and Congress. They CANNOT want to go down like this. But yet they still stay & either do overt acts of evil OR nothing at all.
It's time we start asking them what they are being blackmailed with.
@YDanasmithdutra
Agreed. But for Mobile to stand up to Jeff Sessions like this is a REALLY BIG DEAL. This is Sessions home turf. They LOVE that he was standing up to immigration. Remember, Alabama passed the toughest immigrants laws which backfired on our farmers, BADLY, than any other state.

if they were to have any clout with him at all, it further promotes the idea that government and religion can should merge.
It really shouldn't matter what the Bible, or a church have to say about any governmental employee let alone someone in law enforcement and the judicial system.
The form is still dangerous as hell, even though the content for once, is actually ethical.
