GOP candidate compares tapes of crying kids at border to daycare drop-off
Source: CNN
A Republican congressional candidate in New York said Tuesday that the sounds of crying immigrant children separated from their parents at the border were the "same exact" sounds heard at any daycare when a parent leaves for work.
"I think it's extremely unfortunate. But what people are forgetting -- they just want to listen to those tapes -- I can take you to any nursery and you're going to hear the same exact things as a mother leaves to go to work and has to leave her child at daycare. You're going to hear those same exact things," Michael Grimm, who is running for the Republican nomination in New York's 11th Congressional District, told NY1.
Grimm made the comments while defending the Trump administration's controversial "zero-tolerance" policy, which has led to the separation of children from their families at the US-Mexico border.
In a statement to CNN, Grimm said, "To clarify - we never want to separate children from parents whenever possible, however the dangerous journey across Latin America and Mexico is so horrific, we must do everything in our power to prevent it. I am confident that by working together we can put the best interests of the children first and find a compassionate solution that prevents this crisis in the first place."

(47,770 posts)and pick their kids up from daycare. Once the children realize that, they are less traumatized when they are left. Also they aren't put in "cages" with no toys and little adult interaction. What a ridiculous comparison.

(62,444 posts)The parents come back, and the child eases off of separation anxiety.
This is a traumatic abandonment which will affect the development of these children.
PatSeg
(47,770 posts)I would occasionally leave them for short periods of time to get them used to the idea that when I left, I always came back. Very young children often have abandonment fears. It is common among other mammals as well.

Standing in front of a giant American flag, Michael Grimm, the former congressman from Staten Island who was forced to resign for felony tax fraud, formally announced on Sunday his candidacy to recapture his old seat.
The battle between Mr. Grimm and Representative Dan Donovan for the Republican nomination immediately becomes one of the most intriguing congressional primaries in the nation next year, and gives Democrats renewed hope to pick off the last congressional Republican who still represents New York City in a district that has proved elusive in recent years.
His second life as a candidate would seem to be a remarkable and unlikely turnaround for Mr. Grimm, a former Marine, a former F.B.I. agent, a former congressman and a former felon who served seven months in prison.
But at the announcement rally on Staten Island where numerous attendees rolled up in motorcycle gear and muscle cars, including a yellow Corvette, and a girls cheering squad performed and later posed for pictures there was little sense that Mr. Grimms criminal past mattered much.

(7,540 posts)They wouldn't hire you if you'd had any of your own major tax issues in the past.
So felony tax fraud...against the goverment...means you can't get a government job, but you can still run for Congress and ostensibly be elected to control laws which involve taxes.
I guess truly everything's okay if you're rich and white.

(9,897 posts)Even giving voice to such inane bullshit should be unthinkable...to do it with the expectation that people will accept such horseshit and quell their outrage at child detention and infant concentration camps is mind blowing.
I had to be the one to take my first daughter to daycare on the first day she spent away from my wife and I following her birth...at the age of 8 weeks old. My wife could not handle the idea of leaving our baby in the hands of ANYONE...for EIGHT HOURS...KNOWING we would be getting her back that same day. I was gutted myself when I had to leave the daycare and head to work that day, but i KNEW my child was being cared for, watched, and RETURNED that day. And she knew it too...so while the trauma was real that first day, everyday after that became less and less traumatic because we all KNEW we would be reunited THAT SAME DAY, EVERY TIME...
These callous, inhumane assholes out there defending this need to be tarred and feathered with this decision for the rest of their lives. They deserve to answer for it on every job application, rental agreement, loan application and document they file FOREVER. When you are a monster, defending the indefensible comes easy...real life and integration in civil society should NOT forget this...

(47,770 posts)Our elections need a major overhaul and run-offs would help keep the nutjobs away from power. Look at what the Tea Party/Freedom Caucus has done to congress. Run-offs might have prevented a lot of those candidates from winning a general election. Many of these screwballs aren't qualified to be greeters at Walmart.

(57,537 posts)three or more. In Republican held districts that went Tepublican, being an incumbent seen as "safe" in an off year election will easier to pick off because of voters who miss the election but who are confident that old Rep Soandso will keep his seat anyway. Ask Rep Eric Cantor how surprised he was as a 14 year member AND Speaker of the House.
In some ways I'd like mandatory voting with thumbs dipped in indelible ink. Those with no ink do not get to discuss politics in any way until the dye wears off of voters' thumbs.
We've seen quite a few republican incumbents unseated by a TeaParty oddball and early TeaParty favorites eventually became moderate in comparison to those who followed them. Apparently politics became the occupation for people with no talent or skills whatsoever, aside from fomenting fear and hatred. Most of them have no idea how government even works, much like the grifter in the White House.

(47,770 posts)pretty much anything goes. We haven't tested a convicted murderer yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if even he/she could get elected. If, however, you are a Democrat, the wrong colored suit or a cough could be a disqualifier. Democrats are held to impossibly high standards. It is so bizarre.

(4,033 posts)Had a relative with a young son (toddler age). Hubby had skipped out and she was working full-time. She found a well-rated day care close to her work. One day when she went to pick up son, she heard two employees casually talking about how the day-care administrators had ignored the fact that a few days ago her son hadn't wanted to take his nap, so the teacher in the room had duct taped him to his mat!
Relative went straight to the police station and reported said event. Cops, including a detective, were dispatched immediately, and the day-care was shut down on the spot and shortly thereafter their licence was revoked. Eventually, the license was permanently revoked, the owner was forbidden from ever getting another one, one of the employees went to jail, and a $100,000 settlement was reached for our relative to hold in trust for her son.
That's how day-care really works!

(12,602 posts)I do not recall a single time when I visited her that more than one child was having a melt down, usually because someone took their toy. Of course, they knew that if they needed to, they could go up to her and get a hug, or sit on her lap until they felt less upset. And every single student hugged her goodbye at the end of the day. I often wished the same thing happened at my work, but the other attorneys and judges weren't keen on the idea.
Right wing GOPers are heartless bastards. I'm glad I didn't have one as a parent.

On April 28, 2014, Grimm was charged by federal authorities with 20 counts of fraud, federal tax evasion, and perjury. On December 23, 2014, he pleaded guilty to a single count of felony tax fraud, and "acknowledged committing perjury, hiring illegal immigrants, and committing wire fraud".
So he hired "illegal immigrants" ..........................
