Trudeau urges Canadians to travel and buy Canadian in the face of U.S. trade dispute
Source: Toronto Star
OTTAWAAs a Canada-U.S. trade dispute threatens to grow nastier, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is encouraging Canadians to travel and spend at home though he stopped just shy of urging a boycott of American goods and destinations.
Asked by reporters how Canadians should respond to the ongoing trade actions of the U.S. administration of President Donald Trump, and whether they should boycott U.S. products and travel spots this summer, Trudeau said its up to individuals.
When the Liberal government announced its $16-billion list last month of dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs to push back at Trumps 25 per cent tariff on Canadian steel and 10 per cent tariff on aluminum, it ensured there would be readily available Canadian substitutes, or products from countries that do not face tariffs, for consumers to choose from, he said.
As for Canadians, Im always one to encourage Canadians to discover our extraordinary country, to take vacations here at home, to continue to Buy Canadian and, if Canadians are looking for extra reasons to do so, then so be it.

He added after that statement that it's "important for Canadians to make their own choices" on this.

We're headed to central Mexico for the next nine months...and there are nearly as many Canadians as American's living and visiting there today.

(5,485 posts)We have developed some very good friendships through the years, in places like Vancouver, Victoria, and even as far out as Calgary and Edmonton. Most Canadians we have met just really feel kind of sorry for US citizens living under this regime. They are sorry that we got to this point, and are also a little scared that something similar could happen in their country, too.
Hoping to be able to spend some more time this year in Vancouver and Victoria. We have timeshares that we can use, and always have a great time relaxing, enjoying the food, and taking in some of the museums. (We spent most of a day at the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, and will spend at least 2 days exploring that facility the next time we are there.)
I have no problem spending some of our vacation and touring money in Canada. We have always been treated well, and, right now, the buying power of the US dollar is a little like getting a 25% discount on everything.

(15,573 posts)US citizens should vacation in Canada too! And spend money there. Piss off the Dump crime family even more. Fortunately for me, I live in SE Michigan so it's less than 45 minutes to the border.
